Guys that have a stock 462 and ported 361

I just cut some 20 inch Hickory today for firewood for the house with my new 462. I’m impressed with the saw. I’m running a 20 inch Tsumura light weight bar and Oregon EXL chain. My thoughts are to keep a 20 on this saw as I have a 461 with 25 and 28 bar. I also have 361 that wears a 20 and wondering if a 361 ported would perform like a stock 462. The 361 is about half pound lighter and if it could perform like a stock 462 and be lighter and better handling is there a need for a 462 if you also have a 461 when longer bars are needed? I’m not second guessing the 462 it’s a great saw but the numbers I see is that the 461 and 361 are animals once ported and the 462 doesn’t gain as much. For those that own both what are your thoughts?

462 has better filtration over the 361 and at 1/2 pound heavier find a lighter bar to equal it out

Not sure about the 361, but I have thought about letting my MMWS 362 go to fund porting the 462. I just don’t use that saw much now that I have the 462.

I’ve run a ported 361 and stock 462 a decent amount. The ported 361 isn’t a stock 462 and the stock 462 isn’t a ported 361 lol. The stock 462 has more torque and will run a 24” bar felling hardwood trees with less fuss. The oiler and AV is also better on the 462 with a 24” bar. With a shorter bar in softwood there pretty close though. Imho the 462 is a better all around saw. I have a hard time liking 60cc saws. In my opinion they are too in between. I prefer a 50/70cc combo.

I agree the 50/70 is hard to beat. Since I have a 461. I’m just debating in my mind if a ported 361 and 461 would make sense having a 462 also. Either that or I’m trying to talk myself out of selling the 361’s. I would really like to port my 361 and 461 after seeing dyno numbers they turn. If I had them ported would my 462 see any use. If I decide not to port them the 361 will probably get sold

I think a 461 cuts about the same speed as a 462... but with more torque. Kind of like the ported 361 cutting a similar speed as the stock 462 in smaller stuff, but the 462 having more torque in larger wood.

I’ll try a 28 on the 463 and see what my thoughts are after that about the pecking order.i will say the 462 feels like the best all around saw I’ve used. It feels smooth

I appreciate it, but I just can’t seem to decide, lol. I have several from Randy and enjoy every one of them. I just seem to grab the 462 if I am cutting firewood or cleanup. If I’m falling, I grab my MMWS 461. If I am in smaller stuff it’s the MMWS 261.

I have a muffler modded gasket delete 361 and a TM 462. The 361 doesn't get used. the 462 with a 25" es light is my go to for anything but a bunch of 20" plus bucking or a bunch of 3" and under limbing. most trees it's the only saw I start.

Ive made money with a lot of different saws over the years. I gotta echo the sentiment here and say I've never been a fan of the 60cc saw class. I've got several 50cc or smaller saws and 70cc+ saws.

Seems like every couple years or so I forget how little I run a 60cc saw and break down and buy one. Last one I owned was a dolmar 6100. Great saw that just sat in favor of a 50cc or 70+cc saw. A 60cc saw is great for the homeowner or firewooder looking for a do it all 1 saw plan.

Having run quite a few ported and stock 361s and 462s at several GTGs, I'd definitely keep the 462 and 461 and sail the 361 on down the river. But that's just me. You might get better feedback if you let us know what saws you currently own? Is it just the 3 saws you mentioned or do you have other saws too? What do you typically use your saws for? A cord or 3 of firewood a year or 12+ full cord for an outside wood boiler?

Of your going to keep the 461...I don’t know why you would keep both the 361 and 462. Ported 361 I have ran up to a 28” in hardwood. For only wearing a 20” bar it will fly through things with no issue.

put a Stoeckel stack integral vstack with a uni filter to solve any filtering issues and pass that 462 down the road...

Which is your favorite to use?

Out of my ported saws, probably the 261 just because it RIPS. I also have a MMWS 395, it’s fun when going to cut with other people, especially with full skip and 20-24” bar, lol. It has a unique sound when it fires up! They all have their place and I tend to use most of them equally as much. Fall with the 395 or 461, limb with the 261 and buck with the 362 and 462. I generally take all of them with me and just use them until they need fuel and sharpened. I enjoy saws and cutting wood, so it will probably just stay here for when I need it.

I currently have 2149/53, 261c, 361, a never used 361 I’m saving, ported 2159, 462, 461. Have 200 acres about 170 is timber. Cleared a 1200 foot by 25 foot right of way and cut up wind blown trees for firewood . Built couple of barns with the lumber. Sometimes I go 4 or 5 months without cutting anything. The 462 is the best all around saw I’ve had but it’s new and hasn’t had time to have any quirks yet. It seems to be close to the 461 in the 20 inch hickory I cut but feel like I should keep the 461 for bigger stuff.

462 is my new plan to park the 660 when not needed but you have a 461 to cover that.
The 362 I'm not sure will ever catch my 361 with a 20" bar.
I'm the exception to the rule. I don't run rubber mounted 70cc saws or any 50cc saws much but have plenty of both. My 361 took a lot of work to pull a 28 but it owns a 7 pin 24 or 8 pin 20. Will I change that... not likely. Would I try to replace it with a 4xx anything... not likely.
It will take some work and some changes but the 361 will always be my go to ground clean up saw followed by the 462 with a bigger bar. The 361's or 362's do pretty well up to medium hardwoods. The 362 has more nut, just a bit, so my nod can go to it when doing the stem bucking but I don't like it much for felling or other tasks. 361 or 660 was my go to or the 200T up top. 036 or the 360 pro is going to be heading back up for chunking. The 462 could see some climbing but not much.

You have a good three saw plan there imo. Let me know how far you plan to go on your 361 build. I'm bringing out mine for play this year. Might have walked the fine edge of work and play saw on one of them.
