So rather than derail deets thread, here we go. Oil thread :stick:

I was having a discussion with my brother. And he proceeded to school me on why I shouldn't use wd40 on the hinge of my benchmade. And really got bent out of joint when I told him I used it on my marlin 60.

So what do you use, what do you use it on and why?

Wd40 is actually a water displacement formula hence the WD. Works great to spray on a gun to help "dry" it out and prevent rust. Not the best lube, however. I use SLIP 2000. Works great on my handguns, rifles and shotguns. Doesn't build up and stays thin even in cold temps when I'm hunting geese and ducks in extreme cold.

The small bottle is a needle oiler I get from Brownells.

Not real fussy. WD works good for quick light duty and electrical. Others are better for long lasting protection. I use panther piss (eds red) for most general household/garage lube. Mix varies for task at hand.

CLP, Ballistol, Hoppe’s, Rem Oil on all my guns. When everything is cleaned...barrel, receiver, stock, scope and all are wiped down with Silicone spray on gun and reel cloths. Haven’t had a speck of rust on dozens of guns in 40 plus years.

I have some rem oil I use. Anybody use Lucas gun oil? I bought some, but haven't used it yet. Seems like it should be good stuff.

Used some quantum hot sauce (fishing reel oil) on a mk2 pistol and that worked really well. Might have to try that again.

Lucas makes good stuff. I'm going to try their 2stroke oil when I finish my quart of amsoil. I used to use Remoil until I mixed up the NRA stuff. Now it's all I use.

I've got a bottle of the Lucas gun oil.
I used some of it and it works fine. Not sure it's better than any of the others.
I think all of the good quality gun oils will work just fine.

I like G96 and Kroil. Used G96 for many years it's good stuff and Kroil works great as a bore cleaner. CLP seems ok but it makes a farkin mess when spraying.

I've read numerous articles on firearms lube and there is a lot of sentiment out there that using a good quality synthetic engine oil is a great option, too. I'm on several waterfowling forums and some fellas use Mobil 1 on their Benellis , Berettas, Brownings, Remingtons, etc, etc, and get along just fine. I've often wondered if the latest greatest super gun oil isn't simply repacked engine oil or something similar anyway. How would a guy know.......

Yep most "gun" oils are a gimmick, they charge 2or 3 bucks for an ounce of oil. Remoil for example is mineral oil with silicone. Motor oil is fine. That's the main ingredient in the NRA oil. I made a gallon of it for about $25. That's less than 20 cent per ounce. It will last the rest of my life.

I think intended purpose makes a difference. Some lanolin or STP with oil mix of choice works great for 6-12 month storage. Probably not so much in a frequently fired hot running semi auto.
