Gouge or transfer?

372xp OE, second hand to me. I don't know the saws history. Piston looks pretty good, likely a replacement. MAHLE cylinder with a sketchy looking exhaust port.

I have been working the cylinder with 600 and 1000 grit wet/dry and a ScothBrite. I did get transfer off. Really think this is scratched through the plating. I can feel the lines but just barely. And I mean just barely, real faint

Okay to run this cylinder or do I need an AM replacement? IDK? Hoping someone with experience will chime in. I'm just a hack with tool box

A little more information. Saw is to play with and maybe ride in the truck. Not a main saw but I do want reliability. I have a DUKE's coated piston already in hand plus CABER rings. Will also replace the soft parts as I rebuild. 2001 model so likely needing new intake, fuel and impulse. Both sides of crank also just out of caution

Okay, guess I will go with the Mahle/Duke or the Hyway. Leaning Hyway, just looks better. No idea of numbers nor do I have a degree wheel. Just going by looks

Side note: both new cylinders, the Hyway and the Meteor black box were cast from the same mold. Different finish of plating, YES. Different finished machining, possible. But these two cylinders came from the same mold. I have little doubt. High confidence. I will bet you a chocolate chip cookie on this. More detailed pics if you disagree

Definitely softwood sawdust damage by the looks?
Although I've never even seen hardwood sawdust damage myself before so yeah is just a guess lol

Seriously. I am just asking for opinions from someone with more experience. I guess I asked the question wrong. ??? IDK To post the question again: "Is this OEM Malhe cylinder usable or would an AM P/C kit be a better choice?" I have the Meteor P/C on hand for a different saw, the Hyway kit was a curiosity regarding it's quality. I think most every Hyway(Taiwan) part I have used so far seems acceptable.

I lack experience rebuilding saws so I made this post. Just trying to learn

FWIW, I used the OEM cylinder and Duke's piston kit including the supplied rings.

I'll try it in a few days hopefully. We will see

Meteor piston and caber rings would have been my advice but the main thing is to run the OEM jug as long as possible.

You’re right that the AM jugs use the same casting and it isn’t very good. The numbers are sluggish and the squish is loose.

Stay away from AM circlips too.

I already have the OEM cylinder screwed down with the Duke's piston and rings in. I did trim the ears(?) from the AM circlips. A dremel tool comes in handy. Booger getting the circlips seated though, removal will be worse I think.

I'd hit that jug with 240, then your 600 and scotch Brite. I bet those lines go bye bye.
