I don't own a lathe, I know a guy with one, maybe I will run the idea by him see what he thinks of making me one. I'd like to have one for 1128's, for the clutch side, for pulling the cases together.

the Stihl case splitting tool that everyone uses/makes ect can be used to pull the cases together as well with a coupling matching the threads from threaded rod to crank...pulls just as sweet as pushes them apart.
same concept as big Walt is lernin us.

I think what I will do is this....put a post in the "for sale" area....I'll build these "crank jacks" one at a time for folks interested. And a "cheap" puller option as well. But not discuss the selling of this stuff as the spirit of this thread for me is talking about what you folks can do should you do something a little crazy like buying a lathe as an extension of the hobby...:) Maybe more will and we can share idea's of stuff to build.

My premise was for less than the cost of a big pro saw, a person can get into a reasonable lathe for the Hobby type and really open up more ways to ..(how do you explain when you have too much time on your hands?? ) experience the saw habit.....and other things. But really a lathe just radically expands the set of things you can do. Arbors, Popups, pullers, just a few..:)

That was where the "Altas" lathe project started. AND for under $1000 I think I achieved that...:)

How about if you can rationalize the CAD thing, why not the Lathe??

OR

Now I need to rationalize a CNC machine??

Josh and I intend on buying a lathe and a few other things next year Walt. :) Our Dad was a machinist for 30 years, wish he were still here. Would love to have the old man show us some tricks as we start this new venture. The math he could do in his head was amazing..all from his years as a machinist for the wire mill he worked at for over three decades...
