I need to change oil, and clean battery terminals. Is there a way to take just the generator off line, and NOT take down house power with it?
Thank you.

On the newer ones (last 6-8 years or so at least), yes there is. You just push the "Off" button on the control console. I've installed and maintained two of these, one a 17 and one a 22?(I think), at my son's and parents' homes, within the last few years. Both have whole-house 200 amp automatic transfer switches. You'll then have to push "Manual" to get it to start and run to check the oil level after service, and then make sure you put it back in "Auto" when you're done. Your generator may be older, or a different setup, but you should still be able to take it offline for service.
