Ever notice that tree removal companies never seem to cut big rounds the correct length? Most of the time they are half (or even less than half) the ideal length of a typical fireplace or wood stove log. They look like Roman chariot wheels. This tends to drive me bonkers because you can't split them into firewood logs.
One day I asked the tree service owner why that goes on and here's what he admitted, "We can't rely on any of this wood being taken by a firewood supplier. Most big rounds wind up at the recycling center and is ground into mulch. When we cut the rounds, we make them about 6" long, about the same as a thick cookie, because it's easier to throw them into our truck."
He also said that it costs money to recycle anything, and so he just builds that into the price paid by the customer to remove the tree. So, all of these much lighter-in-weight "chariot wheels", as I call them, have been paid for by the customer in advance.
Guys, it is what is is.
