Silly question I'm thinking of buying the stihl ff1 File guide system. Are all the file guides same or do I have to buy a file guide with file for all my diff sizes cuz I really don't wanna buy the files since I have them but only way to buy is file guide with file so if it's same file guide I don't wanna buy 3 of them with 3 diff files if they are the same

Have not used one, but they show 4 different FF1 models:

It makes sense that if it has to straddle the chain and rivets, that there would at least be different models for different pitch chains.

The actual file holders are different for each size file, since they are held at a specific depth, and different files have different diameters.

Everyone has to find something that works for them.

Tried the STIHL (2 in 1 Filing Guide) / Pferd (Chain Sharp CS-X) for the first time a few months ago. Could be a good set up for the right user. Controls file depth, and simultaneously adjusts the depth gauges (except on skip tooth chain), which eliminates one step. User still has to control the top plate angle and 'down angle'. Nice, large handles.

So it is safe to say that you didn't care for it too much.

Not what I was saying.

Could be a good set up for the right user.

The ones I used belonged to a volunteer group, where lots of people share and sharpen the same saws. The 2 in 1 guides are as easy to use as the basic, flat (STIHL, Oregon, etc.) filing guides, with the added convenience of adjusting the depth gauges each time. A good choice for them.

A lot of guys in these forums like them for their saws.

They are a bit more money than the basic guides, especially if you sharpen multiple sizes / pitches of chain. But a lot less expensive than paying someone to sharpen your chains, or buying a $300 grinder. I am a bit fussier about chains, and like to do the depth gauges separately, but happy to use these guides if that is what is available.

OK. I got you. I like to hand sharpen separately as well.

(Actually, I prefer to grind!) I try to take enough chains with me to swap, and use files in the field when needed. This means that I need to 'File and I grind, and grind as I file'. That's discussed in other threads.
