Explanation of model # and letters

can someone tell me about the letters and # on the different saws? Do they mean anything? Do the MFG just give a saw a model # and they don't mean anything. Hope y'all understand what I am asking? thanks

I just realized (I've had the suspicion for a long time) that Stihl's numbers vaguely represent cu.in.
044 4.4cuin, ms150 1.5cuin, 660 6.6cuin? no!

They used to be closer to cubic inch. But then the supers and magnums came along and were way off.

Husqvarna is simple, the first number is the series and the rest are close to cc displacement. A 562xp for example is a 5 series saw of approximately 62cc.

Most Stihl’s have a series number and a model name.

The original name for a series generally was a measurement of the cubic inch displacement of the saw. Then the ci name got bastardized with time as Supers and Magnums (and even some Mag II came around).

So an 038 was 3.8 CI or 64cc. The 038S was 68cc and the 038Mag was 72cc.

The Husky 346 is different displacements being new or old edition, even though the designation is the same.

Many of the new models designations are way off from the name. The 460 is 4.6ci or 77cc. The 461 is also 77cc, but the 462 is 72cc like the 440/044.

Pretty much have to look up the model to see what it is. Husky are generally easier, but also have outliers.

Only vaguely. The 562 xp (big husky mounting) 560 xp (small husky mounting) and 555 (small huky mounting and bit less power) have the same 60cc's.
Same story with the 550xp (50cc small mount) and the 545 (50cc small mount with less hp).

Dolkita's have a very clear first two digit's are the cc's rule. But only if you studied chainsaw, you know which audience it is targeted for.

Stihl is sloppy with their numbering and I have also no way of finding out if it is pro grade other than checking the price.
