I dont think I would ever feel comfortable cabling a tree. I figure if it is a danger to the property or the tree itself then best to take it down. At least around here in the midwest the weather can be so temperamental that it seems like prolonging the fall

I know people do it. It seems like a band-aid fix if it is over property. I trimmed a locust this summer and up 30' that tree was cabled and the cables were cutting through the trunk or the likes of the tree trunks growing over the the cables. It didn't look safe to me at all for property or tree.

I have never heard of a landmark tree around here. Must be a regional thing for sure.

I appeared to me as well that the trees I saw cabled weren't done right. I would think if a person did cable a tree it should be monitored for needing adjustments down the road.

One guy in our area asked me repeatedly about putting a bolt through a tree at a church as the south side of the tree was removed and the primary trunk was straight and strong and they insisted on putting a bolt through it to the trunk that was leading off at an angle that was removed. I told him I thought they would be doing more harm than good and I drove by the tree and sure enough he put a long bolt through the tree. I could see no advantage to it what so ever other than opening up a wound the tree didn't need.

I always bolt through the tree

A picture would do more justice than splaining it. They ran a bolt through a perfectly straight trunk (no splits) into the trunk they just cut off. It makes no sense from a structure point to bolt a bad trunk to a perfectly straight trunk that is solid as can be.

Not much experience in cables, or threading trees for me. But I Definatley see the benefits from it.

I split some firewood this afternoon and reset the carb on the 87 Monte Carlo. What a difference having that dialed in properly makes. They are calling for rain here next couple of days it looks.

Hey fine band. Month flew by quick. Christmas is here. Getting lots of tree work calls. Last Saturday some hard Eucalyptus dismantles. Longest day in quite some time. Branch jammed me in the eye, cut 3 outer layers of the eye. Had not seen this much pain in some time. Had to stick it out 3 more hours and finish the job. I wanted to quit. But I couldn't. Eye is all good know glad I kept it:)1216161412.jpg

One lucky guy you are Norm, stay safe and even though safety eye gear is annoying I wear it now any time I am working bush. I too suffered a near eye loss injury from an errand sharp tree branch, liquid was leaking from the tear but it healed over quick enough to prevent full fluid loss, even though it was very painful.

Thank you my friends. Missed you all:) wife had to drive me around, and she learned how to haul a chipper Back for me. Yeah my bad, normally I'm religious on wearing safety glasses. They were fogging up due to most and rain. I'm going to try some bug eyes. My friend Scott suggested. Next job is blocking out and removing that bastard of a stump....
