Hi guys,

I was given a Briggs 3hp yesterday by the owner of my local Stihl shop from 1974.

It had spark, but lost it shortly after warming up so I decided to do a complete tear dow, deep clean and rebuild. Runs flawlessly now. Everything was within factory specs / tolerances and I didn’t need to replace anything other than a gasket I made.

I’m sure the video of getting zapped will give you a laugh

Sometimes but not always it’s the little rod thing seizes in the shaft, see pic.

It must have been dirt that was dislodged as nothing showed itself on the strip down. The points pushrod was not the issue, but well considered!

Hey guys, a little update on this engine. Because it’s never going to be used on a piece of equipment, and I only ever want it to chug along slowly whenever I start it for fun, I decided to disconnect the govenor linkage as the butterfly would continuously flutter at idle and it was never stable.

I then put my own return spring on and here is the result. It will idle down to 700rpm, but it’s happiest at 1200.

Sounds much better! I can see why you did that given the purpose of the engine going forward.
