I wonder why Echo went to the vertical cylinder design. Cheaper to manufacture perhaps, or just customer perception that a modern saw should be of that design?

I remember someone saying it was to help keep exhaust away from the operator

I would say that one would have to have studs holding the carb .This one has headed bolts perhaps an earlier model .I ran into the same thing on the two Partners that used different style filters .One obviously an earlier model than the other .When I get this one running I think I'll let the owner sort that one out .

I don't know why by design but it seemed to me some of the older designs of horizontal cylinder had a lot more just plain grunt ,Homelite,McCulloch ,some early Stihls .they gave up some RPMS because of either side or bottom exhaust as compared to 180 from intake .Then came the Stihl 020 and 200t that blew that theory right out of the water .

Lets just say they didn't run no 14,000 RPM .You could crank up a McCulloch kart engine that fast but the expected life of a race engine between rebuilds was about 1 hour .Not real practical for a chainsaw .

New carb kit ,runs good for 49 cc .I figured it dates to possible 1978 ,which makes good sense knowing how things were then .
So called gas shortages caused a glitch in the economy and wood burning had a resurgence .Many including myself sold firewood as a supplement to our income which the owner of this saw did .
