Has anyone done any porting on a 4400? I bought one off ebay yesterday and I'm looking for any info/help on porting it. I was thinking of making the exhaust a little wider, maybe lowering the intake and a muffler mod. Not sure what to do with the upper transfers. Any thoughts on how I should go about it?

Edit: Changed the title and will post any mods I do to it.

Also, can anyone confirm that the ring size is 43mm x 1.2mm?

My assumption would be that it would respond like most other similar sized saws would. Echo’s don’t usually need timing advance, but the mufflers are usually quite restricted.

Thanks for the responses. At 43.6cc I'm not expecting a whole lot out of it no matter what I end up doing but Ill post the results.

I wanted to swap cylinders on it, but it wasn't a good candidate.

If you post some pictures of port timing we can better help.

Little wider and open muffler.

That being an older model echo may like a bit more timing. The new ones are the agressive timing models

Once I get it, I'll time it and put the numbers up. I'll also put up some pics of the ports before I grind on it.

Curious if it is like the Echo 4600's sitting here. Not much info available on these.
It's hard to find any info on the 4400, I can't even find the ring size, 43mm x ?. I asked wolf Creek Saw Shop if 43 x 1.2 would fit and they said they didn't know but if it didn't I could send it back and they would pay the return shipping, nice guys, but I'm just wait until I can measure what's in it..

@pavel408 You got me thinking about the service manual and it list the piston grove at 1.3mm, so now I know it needs a 1.2mm ring.

Another possibility is to simply buy piston rings part number 10001138930 without speculating about thickness ;-)

I would but it's cheaper to buy Caber rings.

Over time you find that cheaper and quality repair may not end up in the same sentence. This might be an exception.

Just measure the ring through the window port.
If you ask me how...

I got the 4400 this afternoon and tried it out, it's not that impressive stock. I'll pull the limiters, do a muffler mod and I'll see how it does.

That seemed average for a small saw. At least you have a good base line.
Go a bit richer on the low speed jet.
