I think I had to ground one side, then hook the other to the plug wire to make it work properly.
Doing a little research, I looks like they were used for cart racing quite a bit.

How much do they cost?

I used a four window digitron for years on a mod sled. They are a decent gauge with good customer support. Or they did have 15 years ago. Lol. I also used the avenger three window gauge, it was a lot more robust and stood up on the sled quite a bit better, but they were very big

They do egt as well, I never ran them but knew guys that used them to tune egt’s for drag racing, you could lean you motor out to just below piston melting temp and know you weren’t leaving power on the table....saw them more 10-15 years ago, most guys melted now a motor to learn the temp and were good after that

Used them quite often back in my mower racing days.
Depending on model can read rpm, temps, cht or egt or both and sometimes a speed signal too if a reluctor was mounted on the axle.
They dont like to get wet or damp.
They can be overhauled by Digitron for reasonable rates if they flake out.
The rpm leads and the head temp leads are prone to breaking from vibration over time.

I've got a couple of the older Digatrons - one tachometer and one EGT unit, and they work good.

They still sell new replacement leads for the older units.
