I'm a lefty and drop start -- right hand on the handle bar and left on the pull cord.
So I have to keep the rear handle towards my junk and the bar sticking out straight as much as possible to keep it away from my leg.
If I hold the saw sideways, the bar and chain are up against my legs and junk... bad bad bad ;)

Any tips on starting a high compression big bore saw when COLD? It starts fine when warm, but is nearly impossible to start when cold. No decomp either.
Pull very slowly till just past tdc. Reset pawls as low on starter as possible and then tug.

I haven't tried starting left-handed yet I'll have to give that a whirl.
Not sure when I started using that method. Around the same time I got into chainsaws I had an accident at work and broke the ring finger on my right hand. Broke the middle digit four ways. The grip on my right hand is compromised. I believe that might be why I started that way.

Two of my 066's close the Stihl decomps on the first stroke, one of the 066's closes the Huskys on the first stroke too

I've been resigned to just plugging them. I'm used to it now.
I have never used a decomp on a saw,no *s-word i never have. In theory a saw should actually start easier with it closed.
Added compression helps quick cold starts.

I had an 084 that tore a tendon in my wrist. Made me gun shy for a while.

F-ing chainsaws. lol
I had a Polaris 500 sportsman almost break my wrist, when it ripped the handle away it hit me by the belly button and left a bruise about like a softball.
Haven't had a saw get me in a long time but that miserable basterd bout done me in.

Say what you want, but I prefer to cold start on the ground, and warm I will drop start and use comp relief if it has it.

Works for me, do what works for you.
