I would go only 18" for the bar. 16 or 18 would be best. 20 is really stretching the limits.

I think it has a beat 16 w/ no chain -- forgot to look this morning. Your reply confirms I'll stick with a 16 in 0.050.
He said he would consider selling the 044 if he at least had the 028 working for clearing hunting trails and such.
I'm going to get the 028 cutting well and then make a good offer on the 044 and not charge for the 028 parts.
Thanks!

Smaller saw would probably suit him better.
Even swap. For all the work you already did on the 044.
Grab a good bar and chain. Good to go. Lol

Yup! That's exactly what I'm doing. There is a wire hanging off the area where stop switch is -- I may have to pick your guy's brains on how that is supposed to be haven't looked closely at it yet. I understand the saw runs, but I'd like to get that wire back where it belongs (maybe it needs a switch who knows)... I think the cover says "Electronic autostop" or something like that... maybe the wire has to do w/ that "electronic" feature. I'm still a newbie with Stihls in general.

When you get a chance, post a photo of the wire with the cover off. I bet it is a very simple quick fix.

Any tips on starting a high compression big bore saw when COLD? It starts fine when warm, but is nearly impossible to start when cold. No decomp either.

I plan on building a new hitch mount to raise it up a little more for easier sharpening.

You can even keep the tailgate open.

That was nice to use Jeff. Perfect Height kneeling, be nice to use in a chair or standing up...

I think drop starting works best for me. I hold the top handle in my left, catch the pawls, push the saw down and away from my body while pulling the cord. But you need to get your technique so the bar stays away from your leg on the follow through.
I'm not a big guy, but I've never had a problem using that method, I only get bit when I get tired or don't fully commit.

I will let my buddy know to try that. But it really is extremely difficult when cold.

I also drop start most times. I am right handed and hold the saw in my right hand and pull with my left. That way keeps the bar away from my legs and just feels right.
