Crank Shaft Bearings

Does everyone replacing crank bearings always take the covers of after market bearings. Is this best accepted practice.

I always pick the metal shields or rubber seals out

I don’t really know, but the shields keep as much debris out as they let oil in. I’ve seen 30 year old 044 and 066 with perfectly good shielded bearings and the rest of the saw was clapped out

If you look at some of the metal-shielded bearings, they have small slots in the metal shields. These are the style I've seen in the older 044/064/066 saws like Kevin mentions when Stihl was using metal shielded bearings. Like Kevin said, there's examples where the metal-shielded bearings have been in perfect shape after years of service.

Never seen them in Husqvarna saws, but I am sure you guys have. I will keep my 2 cents to myself.
