What is the general opinion of thermobaric top coat and moly dry film skirt coating. I’ve heard wiseco coats their pistons this way.
Cerekote on the outside of the cylinder worth it?

In a chainsaw application no I don't think there is anything to gain by coating any engine parts other then bling factor. Unless you are racing and are on the ragged edge of lean and so close to melting/sticking a piston. Then these coatings may be of some benefit. On a working saw I just don't see a gain.

wiseco offers a variety of coatings depending on the use of the piston, most wiseco chainsaw pistons are intended to be good for racing so you see coatings especially on the crown and ring land, they do not do the coatings in house they use an outside firm to do them and then turn the coatings off of the parts of the piston where they are not wanted by the customer

I never quite got the gist of it .Having worked in an automotive engine plant it became common practice at least 12-15 or so years ago .Prior to that the pistons went through a chemical process called TIN plating which wasn't the metal tin but rather the chemical bath process that left a dull finish on the piston which was suppose the help the oil film adhere to it .That worked for decades then all the sudden evidently coated pistons were better .

Say I might have one or two of those pistons in my garage which are factory domed by design. Which btw is where I came up with same for a chainsaw .It was nothing I gleened from a chainsaw related web forum .
