I'm rebuilding a Stihl 026. It has new crank bearings and the crank is true. The nearly new oem clutch drum has about a 1/8" of runout from side to side. Has anyone else seen this? Or have I just never noticed it before?

Mine does the same thing. I thought that was causing my cutting sideways problems. Wound up being mismatched chain and bar. Not sure if it normal but mine is the same.

I haven't fired it up yet. It just seems like it's a crazy amount of wobble for a oem part.

I did stick a new needle bearing in just to make sure. Same amount of play. I am also interested in others opinions. I know my other saws don't seem to have that much play.

I just tried a older 026 oem drum and it runs perfectly true. The wobbly drum came off a low hour 260 that worked fine. Maybe it was made on a Friday.
I'll try the wobbly and the straight one back to back and see if I can tell a difference.

Try to see if bore is parallel to outside of drum

1/8" is quite a bit actually.

Set it up to measure how much you have inside surface of drum to pilot bearing bore.

It's not likely to be perfect but should be more reasonable. Like 1/32"

I'd guess the drum was dropped and hit on the edge of the spline. Could find the high spot and tap it lightly until it turns true

The 260's had the adjustable oiler and the older 026's had the fixed oiler. Two different drums. The drum on top is for 260 adjustable oiler, the one on bottom is for 026 fixed oiler. 20170116_163350.jpg

I think it was just a factory defect. I used the 260 it came off of quite a bit before switching to the adjustable pump and drum. The drum looks brand new and never seemed like it caused a problem.
It's cheap enough to just replace and not worry about it.

Not all 260's have the adjustable oiler. Only the Pro version has it. I believe the 026 Pro had an adjustable pump, also.

The 026 pro did have the adjustable oiler and the compensating carb as well. I've seen several of these drums like this -- It may have been a bad run, or poor quality assurance in the place where they were manufactured. If I purchased it new, it would be going back. Sometimes a worn needle bearing can also cause these saws to make a "pinging" noise from the drum movement. I learned this when I encountered it and had several sprockets on hand to swap and test. Replaced the bearing and all was well.
