Bought some existing stock of Stihl oil in a 5 gallon pail for 50 bucks,

I get a discount ay work so even the Stihl premium oils is around 13 bucks

With that said I used to run Brad Penn with no problems.

Sent from my non internal combustion device.

I learned a fast hard lesson after trying a cheap oil from the farm store. After going through a gallon in my mill, the bar was spitting razor blades from it. This with the auxiliary oiler(and saw) at full flow. I re-trued the bar and ordered a case of Amsoil bar and chain oil, after the case went through it there was no appreciable wear to be found. Looking at the price of a 32 inch Oregon bar pretty much convinced me it was worth spending a couple extra bucks on a gallon of oil.(The Amsoil is priced about the same as Husqvarna brand, which is also very good by the way). I helped my cousin cut up some trees for a day and he had a gallon of Poulan Pro oil(yellow lettering, not the green Poulan stuff) we were using and it seemed pretty good, had nice and heavy consistency to it. After asking him about it it was priced a couple bucks less than the Husqvarna brand, It seems to me he got that at Wally World. Might just be a good economical choice.

in the winter i mix 1 cup of kerosene with a gallon of bar oil it flows better and not thick at all. beats paying extra for winter bar chain oil.
I do the same thing, except I use diesel fuel.

I use the cheapest bar oil I can find which was supertech but is now the camp stuff from menards. I always set my oilers at max and have never lost a bar or tip due to oil. In fact about the only way I have killed bar tips was from cutting in snow during sub zero temps or when using chipper chain cutting skidded logs on a landing. Nothing last forever when fed a steady diet of dirt/sand.

In Australia I the cheapest I find is $70 for 20L (5.2 gallon I think) or $20 if you buy it in a 5L bottle.
Wish it was $5-$10 a gallon here!

I think chainsaw bar oils are overrated!
I only differentiate mineral and biological oil, everything else are marketing tricks - but that's just my opinion.

I don't use chainsaws professionally, thus signs of increased wear caused by "wrong" or "low quality" bar & chain oil show throughout a prolonged period of time and don't tend to impact my allotted chainsaw budget.

I "tune" my saws oilers to a tank of oil to a tank of fuel - worked perfectly fine for me thus far.

Thicker, tackier oil doesn't seem to necessarily be "better" to me as the pump will have to work harder to push it to the bar & chain.

I don't know what the best oil would be!
But the cheapest is used engine oil because one can get nearly unlimited amounts of it for the price of FREE.
Is it good for Your health? Most likely not!
Is it good for the environment? Most definitely not!
Does it serve its purpose? Yes!

These are just my thoughts and opinions of said topic!
Everybody should use what they think is best or they feel most comfortable with.

Hint:
Heavy duty industrial transmission gearbox oil, viscosity 220 / 280 / 320 / 380 / 420 - take Your pick.

Around here it is priced cheaper than all the OEM brand bar & chain oils.

I've never seen bar oil under 10 a gallon here.

I got 15 gallons of very tacky synthetic gear lube out of a gearbox at work. Was only in a short time. I go to Walmart and buy the cheapest five gallon bucket of oil I can find and cut it with just enough gear lube to make it tacky. Might last me the rest of my life.
