I recently had the pleasure of spending an hour or so walking through Madsen's saw shop in Centralia WA. Those guys know a thing or two about saws... Anyway, on Stihl saws they seem to follow the same gauge trend that we see in the Midwest (.050 on 3/8), but only up to about 28". After that it's all .063.

The exception though was for the saws they sell to thinning crews. They said those guys run 461s with regular 1/2 wrap bars and 20" .063 3/8 bars with full comp RS chain. They say that the .063 holds up a lot better. It's interesting to see that that setup has a place out there where normally a saw that size has a full wrap, and a 32" bar with full skip chain.
