Can I use a 288xp crankshaft in a late model 395xp?

I have just picked up a 2015 395 with a toasted big end bearing. Can I put a 288xp crank in? They look dimensionally the same.

You can just run a 394 flywheel with the 288 crank on the 395. Same crank on 288 and 394. I think the flywheels themselves might be different, but I’m not sure.

Well gentlemen, you raised some interesting questions in my mind so I went and had a closer look. 288 and 395 cranks are totally different. Different key slots, tapers and flywheel nut threads.
Here's the 395 (which I picked up for approx $390usd) totalled crank and piston. Cylinder is still great:

Removed the flywheel:

And I find that the crank I thought was from a 288 is actually from a 395! Here is a 288 crank and 395 side by side:

As you can see the taper on the 288 is wider and at not as an acute angle.

288 394 crank are same thing.

394 crank and flywheel fit in 394/5 crankcase. 394 fly wheel is not compatible with the 395 crank...and vice versa.

288 flywheel not compatible with 394/5 case

I ordered 2 of those flywheels..... 394 flywheels are nla and relatively unobtanium. Nice link.

How many cranks and flywheels you need for the 394s?? Them things never go bad unless they are ran over or something.

Being that the 395 taper is smaller than the 394/288 and the cast in key without a steel hub is weak, I've found they have a tendency to slip when you have a saw that will accelerate really fast. I have cut in a 288/394 style key into a 395 crank/flywheel before, it's not super easy but can be done by hand if you have the patience.

To combat the flywheel slipping on a 395. I heat the flywheel up before installing then I hand tighten the nut as far as I can with a plastic piston stop in the squishband. Then beat on a socket over the flywheel nut and re-tighten. Repeat until you can't turn the nut anymore after the beating!
