So, I checked Craigslist while visiting my daughter in Arizona and ended up with a brand new, never fueled Solo 651SP. Everything I read to this point says it's same as a 651P, except for the piston, clutch and clutch cover. So, I will run it a bit and then look for those parts to convert it, I think. Anyway, nice saw but I will reserve judgement until I get a chance to put it to wood...20180117_135848.jpg 20180117_135830.jpg 20180117_135820.jpg

Very nice.
Thanks Randy! You may end up getting this for a port job, if I can find a 651P piston. After my 353 you'll be getting end of next month, of course! Speaking of, my brand-new OEM 346 cylinder/piston kit came in the mail yesterday. Excited to get it sent off to you!

I'd like to see what I could get out of it.

So what's the difference between the P and SP version? Is one windowed, dished, etc?

Also, it's nice to see that your CAD is no longer in remission, @SteveinUT
Different skirt on the 651P piston. It's outside my area of expertise but apparently that's why the P makes another 1/2hp over the SP. At least, that's what my googling tells me.

The 651P also has a 3-shoe clutch vs a 2-shoe on the SP. Only other difference is the P is all red and has a metal clutch cover vs the composite one on the SP.

Sounds similar to the 262 vs 261 Husqvarna deal.
By the way, this things pretty potent. Just made 3 cuts on an old, dry juniper log and it cut like a champ, even pulling with a 20" bar on it. For those of you back east, juniper is damn near hard as a rock.
When it's been dried out for a year, or more. It does have some nice color in the wood, though.

Being an SP its a Semi-Pro. Its equivalent to something like a 555 husky that's not a homeowner saw nor a Pro saw but its close. I bet it runs well & is a little surprising for the OP. I've been hunting down a 643sp 43cc semi pro 40cc class saw. They were 1st made 2007/8/ & are lighter than a Ms241 or 543 or 421 Dolly but have more kw/HP than all of em. While great gear the Solo stuff parts are a little harder than the major 2 brands.

Yeah, I'm a bit surprised how strong it is. Looking forward to seeing how strong it runs in 5-10 tanks from now. By the way, is Solo still selling saws in Oz? They aren't in the US anymore. Maybe there's a Solo parts place in Australia that I can order from, because the Al-Ko site is in German and I can't understand a damn thing on there.

Outdoor Power products was the licences distributer here in Oz, has warehouses in Dandenong Vic & Brisbane Qld. Since ALCO bought them things changed big time. I can still get parts through them reluctantly but they have them sent from Germany where as they used to have near everything in stock. Its sad Solo went down, they make the best sprayers in the industry and had a larger OPE range of products than both Husky & Stihl.
