OEM 441 top end was going to cost me $708 here in Aust-no thanks.
I am just a fire wood hack.
All I know I can cut faster than the old man can load, good enough for me.
I can't tell if my saw cuts 2 seconds faster than someone else.
Was going to do a 044/046 hybrid if I can get a scored 044 cheap.
But if I have to fit an OEM top end might give it a miss.
I was going to fit a meteor but will give this a miss also.
Chris.
Like Deets066 said you can buy a pretty damn nice running used one for that price.

I personally haven't ran a Hyway cylinder yet I'm going to try them out one of these days but no more meteor cylinders for me there pistons are really nice though and the price on those are cheap enough I can justify running there pistons. Farmertec and Hyway pistons I haven't had any problems with them either.

I am following this thread to glean what I can for an 044/046 Hybrid. It is very difficult for me to find an 046 cylinder and I have been considering a Meteor ($~130 for cylinder kit and ~$90 for 046 BB kit). Everywhere I look (save for @Mastermind old AS thread on the 044/046 Meteor hybrid) states only OEM for the exact reasons shown here. Sounds like Meteor plating is excellent, port shape and timing is poor, and transfer tunnels are horrible. I haven't even considered the Hyway for fear that if the best aftermarket was unacceptable, what would a more budget minded aftermarket look like.

I am debating putting the 10mm cylinder I have on this 12mm saw and forgetting about the hybrid for how difficult it is to get a good 046 cylinder.

Clearly a first world problem...

If you do put the 10mm 044 on the 12 mm saw you will be happy it will run plenty strong to pole a 32" bar and chain. If that's what you end up doing.

I can get you one for 225.00

But.....try the HyWay jug, and use a Meteor piston.

Holy chit
Aussie money is thin when spent on Stihls

That's why I put a hyway on it.
Seemed to have good bevels and finish (me no expert)
Good squish,good compression.
Port timing f&@$?d if I know just put it on and cut wood.
But I take in what you blokes do/know.
If meteor has s?$t ports then I accept what you say.
But what would you guys fit if you had to pay $708 (hyway $150)
Anyone willing to send me cheap parts from USofA?
Chris.
See the Boss

Here’s the last Meteor 460 I bought. Original cylinder was ruined and the saw was for a local tree service. It certainly wasn’t the quality I expected. Furthermore I bought with the expectation of a bolt on kit

The Hyway has beat every Meteor I dicked with for one hour.... no more....sometimes less. Hyway pistons are a craps shoot. Y m m v . . .

They last just as long as OE jugs imo when handed to a brutal tree crew. Ymmv one year, tops or less.

I can get you one for 225.00

Bingo boss....you tellum. Good deal there!

What's the probs with hyway piston.
Mine seemed ok but I might of missed something.
Ok to run caber rings in hyway bore?
E.g. hardness of ring.

Sometimes they're fine.....but I've seen some that left a little to be desired in terms of consistency of the billet. Meteor pistons are always good.

Some are nice looking casting some are not. The sticking point, laterally is, are they out of whack or do they fit the bore.

They must have "seasonal temperatures" in there machine shop. So, you need summer bores and winter pistons. Maybe spring bores and fall pistons....I'm just not sure. Buy ten....mix and match...chuck the rest in a can for scrap.
Then go buy Meteor or OE pistons. They all run. Some longer than others. OEM and Meteor fare better over time and come back out looking like they went in when properly cared for over time with good oil 40-1 or 32-1

Jury is still out

Good Luck

So ran it today have to say it's a fine runner the way the port timing is at right now it practically has O spit back that kind of surprised me and the added port work I did to the cylinder must not be to bad I've got the carb set 13,800 with the 32" bar and chain .063 and it's still running rich enough to I think it will run it safely at 14,000 or a little above with a good amount of power sooooo I'm going to leave the port timing alone for now until I get a chance to pop the cabers in. Any ways I'm happy how it went. Posting some pictures in a bit.
