I work in manufacturing, in this part of Wisconsin, I'll leave it at that, I do not work for for Briggs. They way they are treating their vendors right now is unbelievable. I cant wait till these *a-holes don't have jobs and try to get jobs in the same industry they've been *f-wording over for years.

WE'RE NOT GOING TO FORGET YOUR NAMES YOU STUPID NOPES.

Dayum, this sucks. Hopefully somebody will buy them and do it right.

I hate to say it, but the Chicom engines are getting better all the time. My in-laws have a push mower with a "Powermore" Tecumseh copy. They have had it at least 8 years and the only time it gets an oil change is when I am over there and remember to do it. They don't use fuel stabilizer and keep their fuel in an open can. The thing just keeps running.

The Chinese engines are getting better I just don't buy chinese stuff unless I have no option. Briggs had the market in nz stitched up for a long time was about all you could get . I got a Honda powered mower in the end , a better option than Briggs anyway

That paper couldn't have been more biased, but I digress. What's happening here isn't actual capitalism. It's a bad cross of Crony capitalism, and socialism, much to the dismay of the industrial might we used to possess as a nation. I'm sad to see them go, though I've been a much bigger fan of both Honda and Kawasaki engines for some time.

Briggs used to be the standard, and near indestructible. Their 37hp FI engine has been pretty good for Scag and Grasshopper mowers, we'll see what's next, as Kawi has issues with FI for OPE, which is a shame, as the FI engines are vastly better on fuel and combustion regulation. Especially so, given the "quality variance' in currently available fuels... Honda makes a great engine, but their 20hp+ V-twins lag Kawi currently.

Yep, heard not long after I took delivery of my custom B&S 850 IC engine on a MSV 19" Morrison push mower (didn't want an 'oiled for life' power plant) from @markds2 s rellies up here. Last Quantum 60 did over 1000 hrs without needing any internal intention, and I hope the 850 is same
Having said that, I thrashed a rental stump-grinder for 7 hours basically straight on Sunday, Honda GX300? faultless, seemed to sip fuel too. Compete, or slip away into oblivion...

Being an OPE dealer I never understood Brigg's move into the OPE business. Why would one manufacturer use someone's engine who was competing with them in the complete goods market? Simplicity, Snapper and Ferris (all B&S brands) and JD in the box store markets were the main users of B&S engines.

I know very little about the later over head valve Briggs engines .However on the older flat head 8 HP singles they basically made 3 models .The least expensive was a plated cylinder with non bushing crankcase, no brass insert bushings .Next up IC cast iron liner with bushings .Top of the line IC industrial ,iron liner bearing crankcase .
The 14-16-18 HP twin cylinder mower engines had a weak link, splash lubrication .Used on a slope with enough degree of tilt they would starve for oil and break both connecting rods when they hung up .I've got I think 4 in my shop others managed to kill good on occasion for a part or two .
Personally I never thought a Briggs was a bad engine .You have to change the oil periodically though because they are air cooled with no oil filter .

I saw a lot

I have a Briggs on the old (2009) 35 ton splitter. Not one bad thing to say about it. Still starts in one or two pulls and the best it has ever gotten was a tarp at best. Just change oil once in a while.

I have a Briggs I/C (forget the model) on my old 35 ton Speeco. Aside from never idling worth a crap since day one, it almost always starts by the 2nd pull, and has been dead reliable. Whatever model it is, it's post-lawsuit and rated in gross torque at 14-16lbs, IIRC.

Most likely the same as mine. Never an issue idling with mine. Need to fix the muffler yet so it's not blowing on your leg.Muffler side.jpg

Yep that's it. The only issue it's ever had (beyond the idling) is the cheap plastic starter pawls. I've broken two sets of them. I did replace the carb, trying to get beyond the idle issue after a lot of tinkering on the original, but to no avail. It may be a governor thing...

I've got an 11 HP Briggs IC industrial on my home built splitter .I think the only thing I've had to do was change the electric starter gear .This one doesn't have a rope starter .
Odd ball stuff like this can usually be found from MFG supply in Wisconsin relatively inexpensive .If you went to a Briggs dealer you'd have a king ransom in it .--thank you Al Gore for the internet---:applaudit:
The thing has a charger built into system some how .No more than I use it I just fire it up from a car battery with a set of jumper cables .Cover the engine with a piece of fiber glass from an old bath tub and change the oil once a year .Doesn't use oil , no smoke always starts .What more can you ask ?

Briggs seems to be back in business again, I've been seeing more of their engines on new mowers and stuff lately.
