Have this old mcCulloch 660...runs...but want to graft a .404 B&C. Any one know where there is or even IF there is a McCulloch .404 "Spur" for these saws? Might have to build one if there isn't. I have a bunch of 1/2 inch loops I guess I could cut down. (Semi NOT full chisel!)

There are a lot of spurs available for those. If you can measure the output shaft diameter- I have a whole box of .404" spurs and can likely find one to fit.
I'l' definitely do that! TY! Its an old 660.. figure the most teeth for the smaller .404 would make sense. Have an old Stihl .404 roller bar & chain setup I would hack and blend.

Another option is I have a few NOS loops of the 1/2 Oregon Semi Chisel in 78 and 84 links...your have links and the tooling to cut one or two down? Could size a couple of those to the smaller bar..maybe even find a roller nose bar for those loops. Yet a third option.

I have some pre-sets and tie straps for 1/2" chain so I can probably help you with that. If we can get you a .404" spur then your Stihl bar and chain would be a candidate. I can't remember offhand which bar studs the 660 has but it should be doable either way.

Wouldn't matter, I can machine either a bar or adapters to make that work. :) Could send a couple of loops your way, just give me a dollar number & address if you have that capability, that would be both very cool and appreciated. Of course I have to see if the bar "groove" for Mac Pin tail is the same as that Oregon 1/2 inch! I haven't worked on these old ones for years. Also might make a fun project to come up with a "path" for others interested in these monsters to utilize current B&C's to make it more practical to keep them cutting..:)

I picked up a partial roll of 7/16" pitch chain the other day. Do you fellas know if there's a 7/16 spur available that would fit an old Mac 3-25??

I think I might have one of those as well if you get me the output shaft diameter.

I got a couple of 8 tooth .404 Mac spurs from Bryce out in Washington state .They weren't a bad price . He's probably got more .
If I recall the hole size is 19/32 " .You could use a Homelite spur but it needs bored out just a tad bit ,which I did do on a Homelite 1/2" 8 tooth
I actually made a 7 tooth 1/2" for my 650 gear drive from chrome moly round stock and flame hardened it .Talk about a pain in the buttocks to make .

19/32" rings a bell with me Al, but I think that may be for the later gear drives. I remember something about the earlier gear drives having a larger output shaft.

I don't think 7/16 is the direction you want to go as it is pretty obscure and more for Remington and Lancaster saws. My 660 runs .404 chisel on a 36" bar which it seems to like. however, I do not remember the sprocket tooth count.

You probably would be better to use .404 chain because finding 1/2" is not all that easy .I'd imagine running an 8 tooth .404 with chisel chain as opposed to 1/2" chipper on a 7 tooth might even be a faster cut .

I have 2 old boat anchor Homelite gear drives with 7/16" chain that have about one or two more filings left .They both have spark but I've never tried to start them .I may or may not ever or I may take a notion to get them running and pretty them up .If I do it will be one of those fire them up.make a few cuts and back on the shelf so I'm not too concerned about finding chain .
I can't imagine running a heavy old gear drive all day long ,cruel and unusual punishment .Half hour, fun .

I might save it for something else but I doubt I'll ever wear a loop out on the 3-25 regardless what size is on it.

Measured around .58_.59 So that would support the 19/32 id theory. So yea...a spur with that id and 8 pin. 404 is what I need from what it looks like..

Measure the shaft diameter. I may have an extra spur in 404.

The later saws including the 660 would be 19/32" output shaft, older saws (maybe the 3-25 only?) were 9/16". All have a single keyway, sorry but I don't remember the width of the key and I'm to comfortable to go out to the shop and check.

Bryce sells both .404 and 1/2" drive sprockets/spurs, the .404 have gone up to $17+ this year, 1/2" are still around $12.
