The Farmertec is about as cheap as I would feel comfortable using. Pay close attention to the intake boot. Those tend to get cracks or tears in them.

Typical looking filter. They are not supposed to be cleaned or removed until replacing it
By replacing it, I assume you mean the top end, lol...
@94BULLITT pay close attention to the main bearings as well. If enough concrete dust got into the crankcase, they might be chewed up. You should feel it when you rotate the flywheel with the top end off. I have seen them spin in the cases when the bearings lock up. They will actually kind of run that way for a while...

It turns over fine and I can't feel any play in the crank bearings. Thanks for the tip in the boot.

Sorry, every time they dropped off a 420 they dropped off a kit with it. I assumed it was Farmertec since they always had me pick up Farmertec for the 400's in the past. Sorry for the confusion

What you need to do is check how much tilt the crank bearing has .Case in point my neighbor had some Makita ( Dolmar ) his buddy strong armed the bar nuts and trashed the crankcase . I turned him on to Scott at Chainsawr where he got the cases and it came with the crank .I told him to use the old crank which had no tilt .He didn't, tossed a chunk of the bearing cage up through the transfers nicked the piston .I saved it ,new ring ,some creative work with a file on the ring land .Could have been very bad

Funny part of all that was he had bought a low hour Stihl 290 from a dealer.Nice shape but once I got the old Dolmar/Makita up and running it ran circles around that nice shiny Stihl and they were about the same displacement .

Al,
Can you describe/show what "tilt" angle is ? I got a feeling its kinda like a side to side "sway" degree but aint sure. I got one that is really "sweeping" in a 460 that I am going to replace for that reason. Just doesn't feel like any other ones ive had apart.

The jonsered 820 I'm working on had alot of tilt or play if you rocked it side to side. Couldn't feel no play up and down but the tilt side to side seemed excessive. After checking the bearing over with a flashlight and pic I found a very small Crack in one of the cages.
