I've been around and drove a few 390's that were real runners. Others turds.
Part of the problem was in the Mustangs and Fairlanes, often the exhaust manifolds (and exhaust) were horrible. Other FE motors had much better exhaust manifolds. Headers, a better exhaust, and a double pumper holly often made a huge difference.
The older 390s, with the solid lifter 427 cams, were rated at 375 Hp with a 4 bbl and 401 Hp with 3 deuces.
I was not a fan of the 428 cause they were externally balanced and not as durable.
