I've been around and drove a few 390's that were real runners. Others turds.

Part of the problem was in the Mustangs and Fairlanes, often the exhaust manifolds (and exhaust) were horrible. Other FE motors had much better exhaust manifolds. Headers, a better exhaust, and a double pumper holly often made a huge difference.

The older 390s, with the solid lifter 427 cams, were rated at 375 Hp with a 4 bbl and 401 Hp with 3 deuces.

I was not a fan of the 428 cause they were externally balanced and not as durable.

Small engine dealers around here generally service both Husky and Stihl. Dealers that sell Stihl and not Husky generally service Husky also. The big box store offering has a lot to do with that.

I never ran a Husky until this year. After doing so with a 61 and a 353, I must admit that I've been asleep. I think I can not only live with a Husky but I can likely service and rebuild one as required.

I knew a guy that yanked a freaky good running 396 out of a Chevelle and replaced it with the 427 he had to have. It was slower, and the sold the 396 to buy the 427!

With cars it's like saws, it's all in the build. A well ported 046 will run circles around a standard 066 even though the 066 is bigger and may be worth more money.

For me, one I went to blower cars, I never went back to aspirated engines much. Kinda like once you go with ported saws, most stock saws seem to be really lame, with a few exceptions of course.

428's never impressed me much, 427's did! Maybe because they were medium risers. High risers and tunnel ports must really have been something.

I went to blower cars, I never went back to aspirated engines

Currently running a Whipple Twin Screw Intercooled on a 4.6 3V. Puts out 530 Hp. Feels just like the 427 did in the 70 Boss 302 body.

The 427 was a 66 Holman & Moody seasoned block with the crank cut 10 & 20, but it was a low riser motor, so I put 428 CJ heads on it. (427 Medium & Hi riser heads had larger combustion chambers along with larger valves, the 428 CJ heads had the same valves & combustion chambers as low riser heads, but had medium riser ports).

they are both good saws when they run and we they don't they are junk.

High risers and tunnel ports must really have been something.

I bought the 427 short block for $300. The guy also had a set of Tunnel Port heads (the pushrod sleeve was in the middle of the port) but he wanted $1,500 for them, way too much for a college student!

427s were internally balanced, had a larger bore than a 428 and the same stroke as a 390, and the piston pins were dead on center (for high RPMs). All other passenger car motors had the piston pin slightly offset to improve idle smoothness. Mine also had cross bolted mains and a side oiler block (all oil went to the bearings, you could not run a hydraulic cam in that engine). Also, the freeze plugs were screw in, not pressed.

I plan on getting and repairing a few Huskys I had a 350 I was gonna do the 346ex top end on but had to many projects at once ?
I've also been talking to one dealer who services any saws and has a lot of saws never pickedup, paid for or junk ( to them ) he said he may give me all of them once he can go through all of em ? I can't wait.
And the new guy learning saws said to me I've never seen someone buy a pistons and no cylinders ? Lol because I bought 026,044, & 066 pistons. For them if it's scored they have to put new cylinder on it ?

I'll stick with big Mac's. I'm a 125 guy myself and do not think an 088 is better in any way for 50" bar stuff. However, I am fairly convinced the 046 IS better than a Mac 850. And running Homelites is just plain like driving an old truck with no power steering. A tough and rough ride for sure, now keep hanging on. Husky's, what are they? Some kind of sled dog :p.

Husky saws have always performed better for me. I have had very good luck with both Stihl and Husky except the electrical parts for the a Husky G model saws suck. STihl Arctic are much better.
Stihl has some nice touches like lacking screws and I think over all the pro model stihls might just be a hair more rugged. The non pro Stihls,like the husky non pro stuff is garbage.

whats wrong with driving a truck a truck with no power steering? i drove one for years.

I find Husky's have cheap plastic when I knock on it and lots of sharp edges .
I havent noticed the plastic any less durable between the two. Husky plastic does seem to fade faster when exposed to the sun and they do have a more boxy shape.

We likely need a thread titles "Echo chainsawers exposed to extreme danger" Call OSHA and UL for specific laws to protect these users? Well maybe not. If the plastics were that bad, some damn litigator would have forced Echo to change things up a bit, at least in the US.
