Just curious how they tell if your saw is ported?

Probly more from the muffler standpoint

You’d think keeping the screens in the muffler would be adequate enough...

If there’s a fire there will be an investigation all equipment involved will be taken for the investigation. The state will look for any reason they can to get out of paying for the fire services so why chance it for a little port work.

Some places it is. It just depends on whose ground you’re working. Economically, it’s not worth having extra equipment designated for specific properties that will sit otherwise.

I think Jared summed the liability aspect up quite well.

Edit to note one critically important thing with stump manufacturing-a wicked chain on a good running saw will make up for a lot of a ported saw’s speed, and likely last longer while cutting full time.

I own:
- over a dozen saws, small, mid, large, stock, ported
- over two dozen various bars
- about three dozen various chains and keep adding

How am I not open minded to new things to try?
FFS, I am running .325" RS on my PS-9010 and prefer it over 3/8" RS.

Compared to turkey oak, which I buck for firewood, beech and "regular" European oak are speedwood.
Locust is "hard", but not nearly as dense as turkey oak.
Any conifer species is like cutting a sponge.

I will with enthusiasm try new things, but I will not revert to things that did not work for me!

Am I truly alone with my stand that ported and ever so seemingly faster saws aren't always better for the intended purpose?
Fine with me, I don't like crowds anyway.
I've been finding that ported saws are good for cutting hardwood faster if you like to lean hard on your saws, or if you don't do any cutting with the tip of the bar (so you can run a super aggressive chain). So far, I'm happy with my 395 stock. I put an 8t rim on it because I couldn't load it with a 32" bar without leaning way too hard on it. Granted I use full skip, but I still made the chain about as aggressive as I can use for bore cutting, and it still has power to spare. When cutting fast is the priority, and I like cutting fast, you about have to have more than one saw (I know, what's wrong with that!?) so you have one for softwood, hardwood, big wood, and bore cutting. It isn't always convenient to bring a bunch of saws out to cut some wood, but it saves the time of swapping chains and rims certainly on stupid outboard clutch saws with no side chain adjuster.

I have found that since my skills and knowledge have increased, so that I make often use of bore cutting, I prefer less aggressive chains, and so less powerful saws. And having a saw that doesn't need tuning all the time is nice.

I actually did fall a few dead trees on dads place today. I had my rakers set too high on a chain I’d sharpened, so I was a little disappointed with it. I was really disappointed with it after the last dead tree had about 3 or 4 strands of barbed wire that I cut through in it :(. I was just walking around on the place without an extra chain, so that was the end of my work for today.

I was beat after only about an hour of working, had cold sweats, and felt like crap while doing this. Turns out I tested positive for covid this morning. So far it’s kinda like having the flu. Thankfully dad was nowhere around.

No, but you get to piss of all the neighbors.

You do, but you also have to scream louder. It's not all it's cracked up to be. I think I like ported saws to get through certain cuts quicker, the boner I'd get from sound and speed is pretty much gone. Can you help me get it up again ?

My deuce came from the factory with a 3.5" straight pipe (unmuffled). Sometimes I run a muffler (around my 'hood), mostly I run a 5" stack I made...

...even people who aren't motorheads know something is up with the 6100 when I start it. I like that saw. - but I wouldn't be running it on a residential job.
