I'm no pro, but I like bars a little on the long side and light. Of course skip chain helps.
Mainly for reach and not having to walk around to the other side and cut again. But I won't bury a long bar in more wood than the engine can hang with. Plus if I cut half from each side it would look like a beaver chewed it off, ha!

I hate the heavy 30" Cannon Super Bar on my 395. 24" bar bucking with 395 is fun.

A lot of it depends on the wood. I have big soft pine, big hard sticky pine, big rotten whatever, or big hard euc...

playing with the 42" (got it mostly to try milling) the other day I discovered my saw didn't get all dusty cuz it was 3' from the log! Dusty rotten desert wood, that's actually kinda nice...

42" - when you're over here and the log you want to cut is on the other side of the pile...

Also...only time I've had kickback was short bar in big log...I'd just as soon have the bar tip out the other side...probably a good idea for newbs. Also helps a lot with chip clearance.

Thinking about bar length for on it's way to me first 70cc...I'm 6' and I think I want the bar just long enough to reach the ground at a slight angle.

Pretty sure it's gonna be 28", might be a little much and end up 24". I don't have any 28" to try. Closest is 24" on 395. Saw may also get ported, and if so, on the torquey side.

For a 60cc saw I personally would go no larger than 24" max.
For precisely the reasons you mentioned. If you need larger bar, go bigger saw. 70cc territory

What’s wrong with running a 32 on a 60cc saw? I’ve done it on the 562’s cutting timber.

Have gone through a lot of mix running a 32" bar on a 441. Full comp 3/8 050. Mostly Red Oak but have done it in soft woods too.
Yep, that's the set up in my avatar. Gentle hand and sharp chain.
Have since sold that saw to a friend, but do the same with a monkey modded 440.
Although the daily driver for my 72cc saws is a 24" bar.

Nothing. If that's what you choose to do, go for it.

In hickory or sugar maple a 28” on a 562 is quite slow cutting. I’ve owned two ported 562’s and ran numerous stock ones. They were realistically 20” bar saws in hardwood and maybe a 24” if you file the chain conservatively. Bucking stationary logs is easy, but felling I like to have reserve torque. That said, maybe in softwood with a well set up chain they are capable of more I don’t doubt that. My feeling is this topic is just gonna start a big debate. To the OP just run what you feel works for you. Experiment and test.
