Bachtold rotary cutter mower

I think I'm getting an old Bachtold rotary cutter. Pretty complete w/Briggs motor. Will have to tinker with it as has been sitting.

Anybody used or worked on these?

I'm planning on using it to cut invasives like multiflora rose, barberry, bittersweet........etc. Looks to be just what I need. Hopefully not a "new" headache.......

I have one and have worked on various ones. Extremely simple and easy to work on. They apparently are the forerunner of DR.

How well do they work?

As well as any I suppose. I installed a smaller transmission belt drive pulley on mine to slow it down--it drove faster than I liked and was single speed.

I've got the DR version with an 8hp Briggs IC engine. Had it for 25 years +. Works good but works the operator, too.

I have had as few....still have one. They work well if the operator has a bit of common sense. They are not a brush cutter.

Do you have any manuals or IPL for the Buchtold? The one I just got, has has a 8-10HP? Briggs, older carb has real choke.

I’ve never been able to find any Bachtold resources, but then again I’ve never needed to really badly. The engine should be easy to find stuff for.

I found an owners manual PDF for the first model after DR took over (1989-2001). Almost the same except cutter/rotary shield/housing. Would still like to find shop manual.

DR manual mentions 3 models, standard, industrial plus, and electric start. I think my Bachtold corresponds to the industrial plus, those/mine has a switch for ignition on the Briggs motor. Need to get manual for that, it has serial numbers.

Motor turns free and oil is clean and full. Need to examine later today.
