Angles for dead ash

EAB has killed off all the ash in the mid west and we have a plethora to cut. What are you running for angles on your cutters that makes the chain last.

I never ran anything special. If it got killed by borers it’s somewhere between a little and a lot softer than when it was green

Are you running a grinder or hand filing? I run the same chain setup for everything I cut (Ash included). On my Oregon 620 grinder, I do 25 degree top plate angle, 55 tilt, and I usually don’t use the chain holder offset.

Couldn’t really tell the difference between dead and green as I didn’t get into cutting wood to the point I could tell what species I was cutting till after all them ash died off. Now they are really easy to spot.

I have both round and square grinder and I hand file too. I’ve run a 30,60,90 for most chisel chain and some get the 10 degree offset on the vice. Semi chisel is 30 75 90. Less hook. Works for 3/8 but my .325 looks almost vertical on the cutter even though it’s 75 down angle. So that’s why my 325 I usually hand file with a grandberg jig.

On semi-chisel I do 30 degree top plate and 60 degrees on the tilt.

On semi I usually go 30 on the top plate and 50 tilt just to give it some hook.
25/55/0 on chisel chain seems to hold up ok and cut reasonably well.

New X-cut chain is fast out of the box, maybe try a loop and see if you can mimic the profile?

I certainly would not call EAB killed ash as being soft .It doesn't cut that bad but requires a lot of filing ,like about every tank of fuel .It's just something you deal with .I seldom use any semi chisel, all chisel . The biggest problem on downed stuff is cutting dirt .About two good hits you might just as well break out the file .Not that big of a deal,a 20" loop takes about 5 minutes .

80% of the wood I cut is borer kill ash. I mainly run full chisel RS and handfile to the factory angles with good results. Like Al says it seems to be a sharpen per tank regardless of hitting the dirt or not. I just bring spare chains and saws to make the most production out of a day

There's all kinds of tricks like taking the gullet clear down to the tie strap so it carries a bigger chip .Using about 10 degree up from the side to the top helps some .The most important is the "working corner "where the side meets the top .It's just one of those things where to some it comes easy to but for some never really get it .The only way to master it is to do it .BTW I like RS .Costs more but lasts twice as long as most .
