So, this coworker of mine whom I have rebuilt a couple of saws for tells me today that another friend of his has a saw that "needs alot of work" that he wants me to look at. He doesn't know what it is or what it needs. Pretty sure it's going to be another Husky though.. Which is good because that's what I'm most familiar with..

On top of that, this same coworker has a couple more saws that belong to his tree service employer at his second job he wants to bring me. The 2 I have already done belong to said tree service and they seem to be happy with my work...

I've worked on precisely 1 creamsicle... An 038 Super AV that needed a tank/rear handle and intake boot swapped. Pretty simple stuff.

All said and done and aside from my paranoia that my saw rebuilds don't hold up, I'm enjoying fixing up saws for other people and making a little extra CAD money for myself in the process... I DO have my 359 project I need to get off the ground... which I am picking up my crank bearings, seals, and gasket set for tomorrow! :D

I'll post up pics of this mystery saw when it lands in my lap.. LOL!

Did you get your nuts on it yet? I know the feeling of side work coming in. Sometimes I come home from work to cars/trucks in my driveway or ope by my garage. I am not a fan of the guessing game of who owns it if they don't call me right away, or leave a note.

I started out about two years ago putting up a add on CL looking for non running saws. I would fix them to flip them. Over time I started getting people asking if I work on saws. At first I said no, then I started saying yes, this winter I started doing work for a tree service. They ended up liking my work better than the cobbled up work the prior guy did for them in the past.

At this point I am in my shop almost every evening for 3-4 hours and usually on Saturday afternoons too.

I have been getting calls from people asking if I work on mowers, blowers and tillers.

Side job money is nice. It fuels my CAD, TAD and GAD.

Once it starts it doesn't end. I have always fixed a friends saws, he works for Asplundh. Within a month I was fixing 10 or 12 guys saws and they can break things that I thought could not be broken.

I get asked quite often to work on saws. I'll do it for friends. (not just a casual acquaintance but an actual friend) And I'll also do it for customers. That includes people who have purchased a saw from me.
The reason I don't fix chainsaws is that they're a hobby for me. I only like to work on ones I own. As soon as I start fixing other people's stuff, it puts additional pressure on me and isn't "fun" anymore. So I just tell people I only work on my own saws.

I know what you mean about the added pressure Fearofpavement... It's one thing for me to make a mistake or overlook something on my own saw, wheeler, mower, boat, vehicle, etc etc... But when I work on someone else's property, regardless of how thorough I try to be in diagnosis and quality of my work, I'm always a little paranoid that I missed something or did something wrong and the thing won't hold together.. So far, so good though. I do enjoy it, I like to help friends out. And the tree service that owns some of the saws I have been working on is owned by a good guy here in town. I'm hoping a saw repair for him in the future leads to a horse trade for a blown up 394/5 some day.. ;)
