Advice on cutting tool for precision work?

I want to make a rectangle cut out on this piece of walnut wood, to insert a slab of rock, however I don't want to cut all the way through, just about halfway through. Is there a tool that anyone can recommend?

Chisel for sure, sized to the width of cut. You'll need a chisel to clean the corners out after using a power tool, anyway. By the time you got a power tool set up you'd be finished with a chisel, unless you're doing a dozen of them.

So you basically want to cut a notch in the wood? If so, either a good sharp chisel or a router.
