When I was deciding on a 90cc saw there were so many things to like about a 395 but I couldn't bring myself to do it due to the external clutch and front adjuster. I got a MMWS 661 instead.
Curious to know how does a MMWS 661 compare to a tree monkey 066?
I never ran them back to back. I don’t have time for comparison videos. I use my saws for work so it’s always either one or the other on the truck.Tough to say. The flat top 066 is a bit of a unicorn saw. I can imagine which saw would be easier to get parts for.

Catbuster, how do you like the air filter setup on the 661? They have my interest but the air filter 1/4 turn thing seems flimsy to me like it would have trouble keeping the filter tight?

Oh man…

If you’ve read anything I have to say about the 500i’s air filter, which is not positive, take all of that and scale it back just a tiny bit.

The filter base is a little more stout, which makes for a better seal, but they still suck fines. The 660 with an HD2 cartridge makes for a much more functional filter, better yet a MaxFlow, but the 661 is easier to live with overall… And there are MaxFlow filters for 661s.

But I don’t want to get the train any farther off the tracks.

Fellers please don’t misconstrue my last 661 vs. 395 comment as anything other than a desire to not see this spiral in a Stihl vs. Husky brand war like it has so many times in the past. Everyone has been on point as far as I can see. Carry on.

Well I think I decided on the MS 400. We felled, bucked, split and stacked a cord of wood the other day and I ran the MS 261 quite a bit along with the 390 XP. The bigger saw is just great for buzzing through stuff but if my oldest son (just turned 17) and I are going to be running saws for a fair amount of time I think I need something a bit smaller. A 67cc saw that performs like a 70 (from what I hear) should fill the gap in my collection nicely.

Smart choice. 400 isn't really an inbetweener, more like a 70 light. And has a white piston.

Congrats on the saw but be warned, once you get a saw ported you’ll want them allllll ported. I got 3 ported last winter and probably 2 more this winter

Will a 461 oiler fit up in these or how are guys getting them to flow more?

Iirc it’s a 460 oiler that you want to put in there. You can put the whole oiler in there or you can save a little money and take the 400 oiler apart and put 460 parts in it. You can save even more money by just taking the 400 oiler apart and shaving a little bit of material off of the metering device but the devils in the details with that route.
