Ok, I hate proprietary bearings. They make no sense to me. What makes less sense, is to have a bearing in a chainsaw that is $40....especially when regular old 6202 and 6203's can be found around the $5 mark from good manufacturers (nachi etc).

.... I found a bit of a loophole.

Go to jacks small engines. look up part # 525434201 its the PTO side bearing for a 346xp.

Jacks has them for around $30. BUT BUT BUT BUT. If you scroll down, you'll see there is a POULAN bearing there for $20. SAME PART #.

HMMMMMMM

I ordered BOTH. just for the hell of it.

I've known about it for perhaps years. But I was only able to just confirm it by buying both at the same time from the same distributer.

Sure enough....jacks carries the same bearing at 2 vastly different prices.

I'm glad you mapped this out for us. I ordered four just to be safe.

The seal itself is around $8 for the 346 if I’m not mistaken.

A good SKF 6202 is under $4.

The 6202 should take eight 6mm balls. They are available in silicon nitride for about $2.50 each.

So you should be able to make a bearing for around $12, and convert it to a ceramic hybrid for around $32.

The big question for me is why one can’t use one on these in the PTO side of a Stihl 024-064 and skip the OEM seal?

I'll bet it could be done. I had to use a 660 PTO bearing and seal in a 385 once for a logger who couldn't wait for the right parts to come in. I think he got three years out of it on the landing.

Will that fit the PTO 346???

How hard is it to change the balls in a bearing??? Need a press or something???

Forgive my lack of knowledge!!!

best guess, they are using an outdated price file for HOP parts.

I remember seeing this year's ago. So...who knows but that seems like a fine guess.

How long ago was that bearing worth 20 bux? Mid 90s?

Taking the balls in and out isn't that bad....putting new races on might be a trick

I think Tree Sling'r was making his own hybrid bearings. He mentioned buying the ceramic rollers in bulk.

Al and I were discussing this the other day. the question came up as to "where the WEAR" would occur as in Inner or Outer race , or just the balls and inner.
@drf256
gonna take some perty particular measuring tools to get those specs. would really be a benefit to some saws where the bearings are NLA.
