Any of you porters have anything good to say about the 575? I've heard about the bearing issues, and about the comparatively high weight / low power but I'm curious. I work on my saws but I'm not a porter, don't have the knowledge or tools to grind but I know some of you are very very good and extremely knowledgeable. Near me I can buy clean 575s cheap enough that if I paid to have it ported I'd still be out less than a stock 576 or even nice 372. So with a good port job, do the cons of the 575 outweigh the pros?

I'm not what would qualify as an experienced porter, but i have done a couple of my own saws.

I have however attempted an overhaul of a 575 with the bearing issue though. Tried a couple of tricks to fix the issue but they did not work in the end. Myself, I would not make the investment in hopping up a 575 only to risk losing the cylinder from a burn down due to the bearing issue. Seems as though I have been told that new cases have the issue corrected but it's been awhile, so don't quote me on that. If you are dead set on doing up a 575, I would try and secure a set of good cases that won't have the bearing issue first and build on that.

But better than that, I would look for a builder 372 and go from there. Should be able to pick up a 372 that needs an overhaul for a reasonable price. Much better and more reliable platform than the 575 in my opinion.

I've got a ported 372 and it's my favorite saw by a fair margin. Like we all do, I'm always looking for saws and I keep seeing clean 575s for less than a worn 55 so I thought I'd ask. I'm not into anything crazy though, and I appreciate your answer as I'm not a porter either but I would be a guy trying to fix a bearing issue..and very unhappy with a spun bearing on my freshly ported saw.

Well I can certainly relate to liking variety and the desire to take on a challenge. I'm sure a 575 build is doable but I would look to pick one up as cheap as possible to hedge against possibly needing to replace the crankcases if they turn out to have wallered out bearing bores. Or if you find one that hasn't spun a bearing, tear it down to bare cases first thing and loctite a set of new bearings in it. I would think that loctiting the bearings in cases that haven't spun the bearings has a good chance of lasting.

576 ported are strong and I'd guess the 575 would be right there. Just heavier than a 372

Are the 575/576 cylinders similar? I've read good things about your ported 576s

Similar design. Other than that I don't know. I have a 575 cylinder setting at home

Just curiosity on my part, everybody says 575s are pigs. I thought maybe I could get bacon if the pig was cheap enough. My wandering wondering probably won't amount to much..questionable bearings on a ported saw are iffy..I should just get my 357 or my 385 ported..

I think they're still a 6202 or 6203 bearing.

The problem isn't so much the bearings as it is the bearing housings. 575 has the bearing/seal combination on the PTO side.

If it's like the 346 and 390 it's a nor.al bearing with a special seal.

I made a lowball offer on a 575. If he takes it, I'm going to check it over very well and then get it ported. Experiments are fun. You guys got time to port one? [emoji23]
