im starting to goof around with 562’s and I’ve been thinking on the simplest way to mod the mufflers. Not wanting to cut it apart, I chucked up a rotary file in my drill press and opened it up on both ends. It’s not finished in these pics, just roughed in. What do ya’ll think of leaving that tang between the inlet and outlet? I thought it would function well to provide a little back pressure. If I took it out it would be darn near a straight shot out the outlet. I’m going to weld one of my own deflectors back on to finish it off. I’m thinking it will work well, but possibly be loud enough to wake the dead...lol! What do ya think? Good mod?

I just make a door on the back and gut it. Bend it shut and braze it closed.
Not much louder then the hole shot way. They run much cooler when you get the cat removed.
If using the factory outlet use heat tape on underside of chain break or it will melt.

That sounds like a good method should I decide to cut one open. Nice work.

Nice work, there is no "cat" in a 562 muffler though, I think you meant the baffles. It's pretty easy to get heat off the muffler on the chain brakes if you don't bend the deflector down enough.

Starting to research a mod for my 562XP build. On your door method, did you weld it back together? Can't see the second pic with it open.

When I did mine I was able to go through the top port and open that way up and get everything out on top but leaving enough material to hold the screen as I cut on National lands. I was then able to remove the rest through the exhaust port.
I used a Dumore ( Foredome) type flex shaft to do all of this. It was small enough to get deep inside.
I didn’t think the noise was bad but it sure sounds racy now!!!!!

Ya I bend the door shut and braze her up. Getting all the fines out of the muffler when working through the inlet and outlet is a real pain. The chain brake will melt if you open the outlet like I do. Bending it down defeats the purpose. Adding a custom deflector won't fly on the left coast.
They run way cooler when you gut the baffle.

Getting that baffle out removes lots of metal and carbon build up. The metal and carbon hold heat. I do the 550 and 562 the same way. They need all the heat management you can give them.
