I had a feeling it was a clone.... Dude brought it to me and said port it. I said ok but just because you brought me a cylinder alone doesn't change my price and I can't guarantee that it's going to improve by Alot. I started to think it wasn't a real one because, no where on it is a Husqvarna logo nor mahle written anywhere. Plating seems some what decent though.

Its a neotec nh843, how are you going to degree it without the rest of the saw? How do you decide on port width without the piston? What's the going rate on a blind grind?

Idk I told him that. I held up my timing wheel and said I can't get readings without the case, crank and piston. I'm just gonna widen the exhaust by a very small amount and widen the lowers then smooth things out without changing timing. I'll smooth out the transfer doors where the mold left little indents from when the cast them. I told him not to expect a whole lot of anything. He didn't care. If it turns out not to do a damn thing then that's on him. I'm thinking to myself Don't come to me wanting port work without everything else and expect greatness. Waste of my time that's why I told him I'm not lowering the price.

Why should I care. He came to me wanting it done. I explained everything to him yet he didn't want to listen. I have given him opportunity to change his mind. I'm not going to turn him away. Ive got empty pockets and a empty stomach. Plus I'm far from being a professional. My prices are low as it is. Gotta start somewhere.

I figured as much. I would have been shocked if a 130?? 140$ saw came with a good carburetor.

He should just cut a hole in the gasket and give it back to the owner as ported (needing re-tuning after porting job) .
I imagine the difference will be considerable, assuming the piston has a proper recess for clean air flow.

Why should I care.

Because, at the end of the day, no matter all the circumstances of the moment, it's your name attached to the job in perpetuity.
So, you were handed a blind port job. If you're set on doing the job, then port it blindly, you can take a small amount, let's say .010" to .020" from the top of the exhaust the bottom of the intake and even a little off the uppers if you like without injury to the saw and get it to run a bit differently than just a widened exhaust.
Talk with the client afterwards about other mods he/she can do to extenuate what you have done.
Otherwise, sometimes it's better to pass on a job if it is not in line with what you can offer. Even if it means going as far as to recommending someone else that can. In turn this will come back around to you in kind as you build more relationships.
These are just some examples of what you could do, your creativity and imagination should guide you to what you can do to your jobs at hand to help build up your clientele.

A lot of people start a business because they have this fantasy that they can somehow become the masters of their own fate and be able to individualize their product and put their own creativity into it.

Instead the reality is those jobs are few and far between and to pay the bills you have to do whack jobs like these. It’s about survival.

W2 jobs are not much different. There are a few truly good jobs out there but they are uncommon and are usually filled before anyone else has an opportunity to compete for it.

Instead we are left to work what ever job will hire us so we can get any paycheck. It’s about survival.

Sometimes customers have to learn that their dumb decisions have consequences. These days that’s dicey with the already very loud minority being infinitely amplified by the internet and lies carrying the weight of truth more often than not.

For these reasons, I rarely hire out any work to be done for myself. If I can verify a business owner is truly passionate about their work and I am allowing them to do the type of work they are best at, then maybe I would hire them…but probably not.

This is a job that reminds me to have been of a similar scenario. It was a referral from another porter.
The intake port on these saws is like an elephant's trunk, no way to time it, and not much to be done for porting it.
After fixing the boo-boo's the saw had and going after the rest of the cylinder the best I could, with some reckoning of size comparison, I decide to take a little off the intake with a 90-degree tool as well as smooth out that elephant trunk the best I could. Which turned out much better than had I just said fudge it and polished up the exhaust and called it a day. Saw turned out nicely, I just had to listen to my instincts about how to tackle the job best.
Then after being armed with newly found knowledge of what to do with this particular model, I never saw another one again...
