461 base gasket

Have you ever had any saws that wouldn't turn completely over while checking the squish with solder?

every 066 I ever put a top on banged.

I measured the base gasket again, mine is .0170. I didn't have any clearance problems with the c and stuffer bolts. Cylinder went on fine.

Should I try to flatten the solder down to .030 prior to putting it on the piston?

Trouble with flattening it first is as it gets wider it harder to crush. Best to get thinner solder or plastiguage.

But I'm thinking in a pinch. You could flatten it to a measurement and then check and keep going til it spins past with out bumping.

Rechecked the squish with the saw assembled, through the spark plug hole, came out to 0.014 with out base gasket. Reassembled saw with base gasket and it was .030 , with new piston and rings compression was at 185psi.

If you want to do a gasket delete take the old piston and stick on sandpaper and something to push it and twist. Won't take long to get enough clearance. Then clean and assemble again with sealer

This is how I do it now. Works very quick and easy. I used super 77 spray to stick it on but it takes a bit to dry. I just bought some paper with adhesive on it but have yet to try it.

I use the stick on to sand squish bands if I need the last .003" or something instead of the cutter.

No, they are sanding the top of the cylinder (on the inside) using sand paper on the "OLD" piston (called cutting the squish). Just rotate the piston back & forth. It will produce the correct clearance between the piston & cylinder (measure frequently).

Nothing wrong with a popup Mike. Sometimes it's worth it, others not so much...
