So I got a cylinder kit in for my 395, but no base gasket. So do I order one or use the old one? The old one came right off no tears or anything. Has anyone reused the old one or am I better off with a new one. Thanks guys

Tough call its your saw.
Generally I'd toss it in favor of a sealer or get a new one.
Smearing it with Permaatex 51813 will lock it down tight with or with out a gasket. You do need to check the skirt clearance on the case with a gasket delete.

Yeah I don’t want to delete it, just thought maybe is I put some sealant on it and tightened her back down, she might just do it. It’s a tough call.

You can also cut a new one using the old one as a template. Manilla folders work well and drop squish somewhat. I use sealer when I do that.

Motoseal on both sides with used gasket, no tears would work. Let it cure for 24 hours and you will not remove it intact again. Make sure base and cylinder are oil free.

Have you got an OEM kit or is it aftermarket? Either way I would check the squish clearance before deciding if you will use a base gasket or not.

It’s oem, I’m just gonna motoseal both sides of the old gasket and run it. Never done a base delete, so I don’t want to screw nothing up.

Just stumbled across this thread and came up with a dumb question...

Deleting a base gasket would change port timing wouldn't it?

About a degree maybe two.

If the gasket is absolutely cherry, it can be reused, make sure everything is good and clean on the case and cylinder base. If an additional sealant is desired use very sparingly.

So if I have a bone stock 660 and I delete the base gasket for squish, am I just shooting myself in the foot?

So if I were putting the effort into throwing a timing wheel on to check er all out, I might as well just go full port on her

"Usually" you would be going in the right direction. One degree won't have a great effect on timing to worry about in the big scheme of things. Just make sure your squish isn't too tight and give it a whirl. In combination with a muffler mad and slight timing advance can perk some model of saws right up. If not then machining/porting may be a good way to go.

Well I put her all back together today, used the old gasket with a little Moto seal on both sides. I got this saw on trade for some work along with a couple other saws. Can’t wait to fire it up in the morning. Totally went through the whole thing. Now I have twins.

Steve has you covered.

Steve's Mad Mufkin
is the key to unlocking the secrets of the universe and noise. Deleting that base on an 064 or 066 could get ugly. A very late model 660 or 650 not so much. It will hurt the intake timing a tiny bit and most are at 79-82 already. The rest is a win if you don't have a slapper. If your not running a long bar it should pick up a bit. I kept mine stock for work with a gutted dual port. It mostly ran a 3/8" 25" or a 28" o.050 nuffin fancy.

Damn auto-correct!
