Maybe I'm just lazy, but I would flush that bearing with some oil and see if it smooths out and determine why the saw did not start before I ripped it all down.

The bearing may not be the problem. I have very little faith (do to too much experience with them) with the analysis of the saw shops.

Bought 4 dead saws from a shop once, they told me what was wrong with each one. They were only correct on one of them! (The one with the burned piston, and I think they did it after the guy paid to have the saw tuned … all new tune up parts and the Hi screw was set 1/4 turn out). On a MS 440, the diagram for setting the low screw 1/4 out is right above the Hi adjustment screw. I think a new helper screwed up!

So I popped the flywheel and found the seal in two pieces. Not the rubber, but the steel outer housing of the seal. Would this be due to incorrect assembly?? Like maybe the seal was not seated deep enough and the flywheel hub was rubbing on it?? This was my first rebuild that went this deep and I'm fully prepared to accept a mistake on my part.

The more I look at this the more I think the seal wasn't seated quite deep enough and the flywheel was rubbing it.

And I will be putting new bearings in along with the seals. It's not my saw and I want to make sure it's good. I still don't like the looks of that PTO side bearing. Looks like it got pretty hot
