Put a hda87 carb from a 262xp on that 254 and we’ll have a game changer.
I have a 120 sitting in my 262 parts pile that might help persuade results...LOL! In all seriousness, I agree with everyone's prediction on the end results. I think the 254 will lose to the 346 until the bar is buried in bigger wood, might edge it out in that situation.

We'll get the chain thing figured out. Pretty sure I can help get you set up with .325 Moose, or I can swap to 3/8. Either way don't matter.
Not as easy to go 3/8 on a 346 though is it?? I've never looked into it, only skimmed by the random thread on that subject on AS a time or two... Easiest thing would be for us to run to Kahlers saturday morning, then we can all get a new chain and he can get a .325 rim and run the bar off his 550. No doinkin' around swapping chains back and forth and worrying about who gets to make the first cuts and all that other hair splitting sillyness. New chain on each, 3 cuts in 10", three cuts in 18", done.

I have run 3/8 .050 on my 346 NE it’s entire life. Just because everything else here runs the same.

Pretty sure a 55 is like 51 or 52cc isn’t it? The big bore aftermarket kits are true 55cc or something like that if I remember correctly?
I used to know the details cause I was looking into an eventual replacement cylinder for my 51 but I don’t remember being a big difference in cc between the two.

Don't you have to swap a 357/9 clutch drum in to run 3/8 on a 346? I could almost swear that they don't make a 3/8 rim that fits the splines of a 346 drum?

All I know is that the closed port cylinder is 1mm smaller bore than the later open port cylinders. I believe closed port is 45mm and open port is 46mm?

What is that ported 55 tunes to? I know they are a lower rpm stock than the xp saws. I think I read somewhere that the bottom end doesn’t like much higher rpms do they?

Pretty sure he got 13.8k safely with his ported 55. I'd have to check his build thread to confirm. It's definitely got alot more attitude now. The 6202 bearings should take it fine. Lower rod bearing?? I can't be as sure of since this is the first ported 55 we have put hands on.

Gotcha I’m pretty sure they were around 12-12.5k stock so that’s a good little bump. Don’t have my 51 anymore. It was a great and very clean saw but the boss said I had to go down to 1 so I chose my cs-590. It has a lot more grunt and should for the cc bump.

Between the closed port and open port 55, if there is one that particularly might not like more RPM I would put my money on the open port due to the heavier piston with it's 1mm more diameter and not being windowed as the closed port piston is. I have never weighed the two types of piston to confirm, but I would venture a guess that the closed port piston is lighter and shouldn't be as hard on the lower rod bearing as the open port piston.

I have no idea. I bought it new from the dealer and asked him to set it up for 3/8. Whatever he did it took less than a minute before he came back with the saw.

Edit: I know the IPL calls for the small spline.

I’m working 0700 -1900 Saturday so I won’t be running to kahlers with you:(.

Yes we got 13.8k out of his 55, 4 strokin nicely and not leaning out in the cut. Not sure what the 254 will spin, specs say 13.8k but I’m on a new top end so we’ll see. I’m gonna goof around with it when I get home tonight

I'll just leave this here.... 024 super running 3/8 chain with an 8 pin picco sprocket. As most of you know that's bigger than a normal 3/8-8 sprocket

Got my 254 “special” all ready to go for Sunday. I’ll admit it’s not stock, just did a muffler mod which is why it looks different than it did. Pulls a 37” bar like a boss now.
