So my neighbor brought up his 262 that I sold to him. Said it was running fine 1 day, today he went to start it, no luck. Brought it by and I tried it, no luck. Took off spark plug, wet plug. Thinking it might be flooded, pulled it over a couple of times with the spark plug out and replaced spark plug. After a couple of pulls it tried to fire like it was clearing its throat but many pulls later thats all it would do, fire and die. I told him I suspect a coil, but it will fire. Maybe the coil doesnt have enough spark to keep it running? I asked him if it was racing last time he ran it and he said no, everything was fine. Tried adjusting the carb to see if that made a difference, no go, same results. The carb was 1 turn out on the L side. No build up of pressure in the tank, I've still got to pressure test the line, but seeing as its got fuel going to it I bet the fuel lines ok. 150 lbs of compression. Anyone have anything like this happen to them? I'm thinking about buying a cheap coil just to see if its the coil. It might be in the carb, but any suggestions? I'm all ears.

Is the air filter clogged or bad?
Pulling the muffler to inspect the piston is always a good idea before spending any money troubleshooting. I've had saws with full piston meltdowns pull 160psi.
If that all looks good then buy a carb kit.

The coil would be very high in the list of suspects from what you described. Look at the spark preferably with a checker, but even through the spark plug it should be a good heavy blue spark with audible snap. Spark should be able to jump a 5mm gap, it still may jump but be bad if it is pale blue or white or pink and skinny, coil would be your problem most likely. Under compression this weak spark is not enough to continually fire an engine.

Yeah, spark is weak blue/orange. Hes been having intermittent problems starting it. I'm going to do what John suggested but am going to put a new cook on it. Thanks.

One of my 262s was getting hard to start so I did a leak down test... It failed, the plastic seal holder under the flywheel was warped also the compression release leaked. Plugged the comp release and put in a straight seal holder. It starts and runs great now...

Thanks for the reply. I think Iwill plug up the decomp. Don't need it anyway. It might be leaking from there. Don't think its got a leak but I'll do things backwards this time. Usually do a P&V test first.

I put a carb kit in it earlier this year. I will pull the muffler to take a look at the piston. That thought crossed my mind when I was trying to start it. Wouldn't hurt anyway. Air filter looked good. No breaks or cracks.

I've had 2 262's and a 257, that all wouldn't start. With all 3 it was because a dull chain had packed the area around the coil/stop switch terminal with oily dust. Once they were cleaned they started fine.

Only other problem like that I had on that chassis was when the plug wire slightly melted on a fin and went to ground there.

Check the flywheel key buddy.

It's cast in and shears easily.

I had one do this. Got the scars on my hand from those fuggin airbox clips to prove it. Was a bloody mess that day. It will pop, but bog and flood out.

You can quickly check to see if the magnets are lined up with the coil at TDC. I got an extra flywheel if ya need it.

I'm betting coil....Just had to replace the one in my 254...Would cold start consistently, but shut it off and no way would it restart other than the occasional pop. Pulled the plug and it had spark even when hot, but guess it was still too weak under compression.

I'm betting the same thing BUT I have been known to be wrong...at least once before!! Lol

My Fil has a 262 that often you can't hear it pop on choke and it floods. Like John said, wot choke off, and about 10 pulls, she smokes like hell til it clears out.

Yeah, but this one I pulled about 20 times with the choke off to no avail. I let it dry out the last couple of days and plan on starting it tomorrow myself. If it starts that's great, but I think I'm going to throw a coil on it anyway...just for piece of mind. my 3 start great, but I don't know if he just has not got the starting process right. Hes cut MANY cords of wood with his 455 rancher, but different starting methods.
