I just got a 2186 with 390 cyl ported by @Stump Shot from @thinair. Strong saw but I wanted an unlimited coil just for ease of tuning. While cleaning the 2159 that brought me to this forum years ago I was reminded that the coil wire was too long…reminded me of @Spike60 coil college thread. So…I swapped the coils, got some kickback and broke the starter. :-( coil used is 5371621-01

Thanks

Sounds like that decomp you wanted to put in didn't come soon enough!
Maybe the saw would like a 372 coil better.

There's a variety of black coils you can use - 357-359, 345-353, I think even a Rancher 455 coil may work.
I tried one from a 359 and then got the kickback. Coincidence?

I didn’t do anything that might have loosened the flywheel @huskihl…but maybe coincidence it let go?

Yeah, maybe. I don’t believe the black coil has more advance than the blue.

Could have sheared the flywheel key as well. The motor enjoys much more timing advance than the cylinder base or recoil pulley will handle 🫤
I was disappointed to find the plastic starter pulley. I thought this chassis stepped it up.

If the advance was done as I suggested it should be okay, the squish is a touch on the tight side compared to the 390 it was built off of, so compression should be up there and without the aid of a decompression valve, well...

...and like we discussed, if the plastic engager thingy had some wear on it, it didn't have a chance, even a stock 372 will blow them up.

Flywheel was ok. Decomp in. Still wants to kick back a touch sometimes. Maybe I’ll back it off some time.

4Strokin’ at 14,000, backed it off to 13,5.

Only small dry chunk of wood at home…screamin’ saw embedded small chips in my arm and drew blood…

Would be nice to get a nicer starter and air filter cover for it eventually. I don’t mind rough stuff but the rest of the saw is pretty nice.IMG_1162.jpegIMG_1165.jpeg
