Perusing FB MP today and saw an ad for a Stihl Chainsaw 25" so I clicked on it. Looked at the pics and damn it if it ain't an MS660, asking price of $325. It looked kind of rough and the seller didn't know anything about it, but at that price, it was worth the 30 minute drive to go check it out.

I couldn't get it to start until I pulled off the air filter cover and realized the air filter was completely clogged up. After that, it started up and ran fine. I ended up picking it up along with a filthy 009 for $240, so I figure I have $200 in the MS660.

I need to do a minor disassembly, compression test, major cleaning, etc. And I need to see what I have on the shelf for 1122, but I've had a few 066's and 064's so I have a few boxes of spares. Pretty sure I have a new 28" Tsumura bar on the shelf, too.

Now what? I need to quit spending a bunch of $$ on NOS parts and then selling the saws at a loss or break even. I'm thinking some new plastic, maybe an aftermarket fuel tank, a muffler mod, and that's about it.

what's wrong with the tank? looks ok. get a new elasto-start pull rope, OE air filter (the aftermarket ones are crap) and maybe a carb cover...although that one can be repaired.
great find!

Tank is probably fine, but the throttle trigger is busted, and I'm inclined to change the fuel lines out, too, so might as well change the tank while I'm in there. Having said that, I hate buying aftermarket stuff, and I don't think I can afford an NOS tank.

just replace what's broke :p Triggers are easy to find...have a bag full. OE tanks in good shape aren't that easy to find for a decent price.
yea, fuel line, impulse line should be replaced.

The aftermarket tanks have had issues with the tank vents being stuck from the start. You might consider either checking it by pulling a vacuum on the fuel line and seeing if it lets it off or replacing it with a real one to not have troubles later.
Otherwise, a good checklist always starts with a pressure/vac test of the crankcase. As far as freshening it up, all the rubber parts should be inspected and suspect items replaced, carb should get at minimum a gasket and diaphragm kit, rings and piston checked for wear and if it rolls over effortlessly while the top end is off the seals are prime for replacement. Inspect the starter and clutch side both for worn parts and go through it well so you know you have a good working saw that is worthy of cosmetic restoration.
Good luck with your new find and have fun getting it back in order.

Saw your post of this on the other site. Should clean up to be a good work saw. Is P/C OEM?

Jug is OEM, but piston is scuffed. Compression is 146 psi. I think my 064 was quite a bit higher, but I don't recall if that was with a base gasket delete or not.

Checked my notes. My 066 had 180 psi on the same gauge when rebuilt it so I think a new piston is in order. Can these typically handle a base gasket delete?
