046 what year

so i was looking at my 046 cases and it seems that generally the earlies seriel number for the 046 starts with 133 i have one that whole number is x13390 i also noticed that the case is slightly different than the others i have. it is shaped a little differently where the dog attaches it is beefier here is pictures of it as well as newer ones. can anyone give any info on this?

im not exactly sure why the pictures got uploaded the way they did. one of my cases the seriel number starts with 140 they are all d cylinders. the one with the shorter number and the odd shape was a stronger saw than the others but it would shock the hell out of ya when it gets wet

If you call Stihl and give them the serial number they can tell you when it was made and where it was sold usually.

It does not look like a different case to me. Looks like a repair was made that deleted part of the 9-digit SN.

The first "1" is just the location of manufacture (1 is Germany).

Those are early SNs. In the past I tried to determine the SN when the D jugs stopped, but I was not successful.

i just went and took the dog off and cleaned it up a bit and it looks like it may have been beefed up a bit although i cant imagine who would or could have done it in the small town saw shop where that saw came from it looks like maybe a repair. where the next number in the seriel number should be there isnt even a trace of a number there. i will take some pictures up close and post them

I got a real low time early 046. It is a very strong saw.

@pbillyi69 I see your one case is wearing a Pro Safety 4-point spike, you wouldn't have a complete set for a 460 that you'd be willing to sell, would you?

i am not sure if i have a complete set or not. i will check and see.

so i just went and looked i dont have a full set of the four point dogs i have one inside one. i do have a full set of the five point dogs although the outside one is mangled from being on a saw that was smashed it could be flattened out.

I appreciate your checking, I already have a spare inner 4-point from a set off a 461, I was hoping to find an outer that would work on my 440.

Yeah, but I'm a cheap bastard and I was thinking you might sell a set for less than $50. I've got a few other saws needing a dog so I may just cough up the $ and place an order with Pro Safety.

I dunno, I’ve made some and it’s not easy. I spent an easy 8 hours making 4 dogs, so $25 for two hours of work isn’t unreasonable.

do any of you know what the carbs for the early 044 and 046s were. i thought i had and 046 ipl and sm but cant seem to find them. also what ones will work. i only have one original carb and dont know where it is. Im pretty sure that there is a chinese carb on the running 046

046 & 460 used the HD16 walbro.

044 used a bunch of different carbs over the years, some where zama some where walbro. And there's a few flavors of each of them.
