[066 redeye]

Hi Gents.
Can get an 044 at the local pawn shop for $400AU.
Good condition.
Metal tag.
Stihl slant fin jug.
Good compression.
Has the reddish (not orange) plastics.
At Aussie prices I was expecting about $6-700.
Thoughts?

Sounds like it's a 10mm 044 and as long as it doesn't have a fried top end I'd grab it.

$400AU is an ok deal but I wouldn't pay anymore than that.

The 044 is a machine that built Stihl's brand and for good reason - it's a great tool.

The good is that there's an abundance of parts availability so you'll be able to rebuild it and use it for many years.

Top end feel good.
Have 14 day warranty.
If I buy it I will pull muffler at home.
If any scoring back it goes.

JJ, people here are putting $1200-$1500 on 066 redeyes.Not that I would pay that lol.

Don't really need it as I have an early 044.
But not many come up for sale in Tassie.
And not for $400 if that do.

I would pay that much for an decent OEM 044. I had to settle for building a chinese parts kit 440. It's been a great saw though, but I'd still love to have a real one. Plus in the end, my total was around 300 with some parts I upgraded ( oregon rim sprocket, oem clutch springs, filter, and muffler gasket)

I bought and resold a Stihl 044 for $450 about five years ago to a tree service/removal company. It still pulls a 30" bar today in the USA after five years of commercial work. Heckuva saw in my book.

I have two 44's that have the redish plastics and plastic badge on the starter. They are the later run with the slant fin jug and 12mm crank. I would bet this is the same setup.

Yes it is a Torana clock.

Wasn’t there an easy way to tell the difference, ie the shape above the oil filler. The other was is a serial number. Although that can be a bit iffy if it’s very near the change from 10 to 12mm cranks

Yes mine has the slant case so 12mm?
Is this cylinder the same as early 044?
