so I picked up an 038 mag today with a scored top end, hoping to resurrect it.

I've got a company that can re plate cylinders at a good price as a friend who owns a trials bike shop uses them a lot, so I get mates rates.

However I'm not sure what to do about the piston. I noticed that an 064 piston fits well with about 50 thou higher up ring lands, and about a 15 thou higher however sadly the skirt is too narrow. If it wasn't for the skirts I could run a nasty compression set up with only a small pop up, and without messing with the timing too much. The stock 064 piston skirt is wide enough to close the exhaust port, however I wouldn't be able to widen it any which bothers me. I could lower it considerably without free porting due to the longer skirt, however I appreciate this wouldn't help as much as a wider port.

My question is this, do I run an 038 mag aftermarket piston, or an 064 meteor (I don't know if they make meteors for the mag) ? Do I go for a compression setup with stock width low exhaust and a narrow than I'd like intake with wider & lower transfers, or do I go for wide exhaust, wide intake, but more machining to get the squish I want? The 064 higher ring lands would let me remove that tongue from the middle of the intake, as the rings wouldn't come down into the port.

Or as a curveball do I get an 046 meteor and see how that looks in comparison? Thoughts?

You thought about cleaning what "could" very well be transfer on the cylinder rather than a re plate ?

There is a pool of " very cleaver and good people" on this site my friend...I use a air die grinder with low flow and a cordless drill to do what Randy does. I have saved cylinders with that method many times this year...any Nicasil coated OEM jug is worth a go as they tend to remain useable with a OEM or good AM piston and ring.

I'm learning about the wealth of knowledge on here very quickly, however it's not helping much with my addiction! I spend nearly as long on here as I spend dicking with saws! :borra2:

Thanks for the help, I hope I can help someone on here in turn

Glad to have pointed you in the direction of that info and hope you get the 038 running on its OEM cylinder if you can with a clean up...nice old saw the o38 ,worth a £ or two if working strong. Im really glad I was put onto this place by Andrew, AJS chainsaws in the South UK (Im in the south of the UK as well).

I'm just glad I've found someone else in the UK on here! There don't seem to be too many of us yet, but I'm sure we can find a few more.

Awesome forum and awesome people.

If you're ever in need of parts for anything give me a shout, the boneyard seems to be expanding rapidly at the moment

What's the name of the company if you don't mind saying?

Looking for cheaper alternative to nz cylinders.

Also a mate "may" have a piston and cylinder, seem to remember something. What's the cylinder number? Happy to check

Scratch that, I've just spoken to the company in question - Langcourt - and they only do cylinders with a removable head. So the question is should I make a race saw out of the 038 mag? ;)

You can use "Scotch -brite" pads and kerosine and get the same results .It just takes longer. Judging by the cylinder in the picture it really doesn't look that bad .

I agree this will probably clean up with randy's method or yours, my enquiries are mainly for my 090 cylinder, I'll get some pics but it's utterly *f-worded, plating has welded to the cylinder and peeled off in chunks

For that matter the piston doesn't look that bad either .That thing doesn't have to be factory fresh to run good.

That was the intake side, I'll show you the exhaust later when I get a photo
