I have been wanting a 044 for a while. I found a basket case that had been burnt down. Went by a saw shop looking for a cylinder and found this. Guy gave it to me. I figure the plating that is missing is below the rings. Need an expert opinion.

If those songs are high enough yeah I would for my own stuff. Needs to be cleaned up some. As long as the dings are above where the ring rides

In the second picture I think that’s part of the old piston melted to the cylinder. You’re gonna want to get that cleaned off is what I’m talking.

It looks like to me the area around the intake port has been abraded by fines as a result of poor air filter maintenance. It looks like there's a pretty good chigger bite just under the exhaust port as well.

I would say it's junk.

PM me your address and I'll send you a regular non-decomp 044 cylinder.

Very hard to say without it being my hands. you have a lot of mirror reflections.
Around that intake looks like crap. Looking like chrome is disappearing. I'm with
Jacob, I'd replace it going by the pic's.

Work saw of my own, hell ya. Make sure nothing sticking out anywhere, polish some more and run. If you want perfection then no.

For someone’s build, no way in hell.

For my own wood cutter, yes I’d try to use it.

That intake port looks like it was overzealously cleaned to me. The plating is worn through. I’d want to see where the rings landed at BDC. You may get by with a top ring only saw.

The booger under the ex floor needs to be hit with a diamond ball before it eats a piston skirt.

This will only be for me. I know the cylinder will have to be cleaned up. I’m just worried about the missing plating underneath the intake. This saw is in pretty bad shape. The starter is held on by nuts and bolts because the holes are wallowed out. The tank handle is broken in the rear where they always break. Plastics look like they have sat in the sun for 40 years. I don’t really need it but it will be fun to see if it can be made to run again. I have $10 dollars invested so far.

One issue with the loss of plating around the intake port is the fact that the piston won't be able to seal that area as well and you'll get more spit back through the intake system. Then as Al mentions, where the rings end up with the piston at the bottom of the stroke is another crucial factor. Ultimately the plating would continue to wear through and the area already missing any plating will get more wallowed out potentially leading to the piston rocking in the bore.

I've seen guys try to re-use similar cylinders in the past and the results are typically not very good.

In looking at one of those pics it may have had the cage come apart and blow schrapnel up to the head deck .
