A new guy on another saw site paid $400 CAD for this, then came to his senses the next day and asked if this was a genuine saw or not.

Definitely the worst “copy” I’ve yet seen.

The only thing it has in common with a Stihl 400C is the number on the sticker.

Anyone found something worse?

That’s a hard way to get educated on saws. I feel for the guy, but this is comical!

Wow….just wow! I’ve not found any that bad, but marketplace s full of clone saws. I like messing with the folks that post them. It’s sad people are taking advantage of people that don’t know any better. There was a local add for a 660 that was obviously a clone. He had changed enough parts to have the Stihl logos. I asked several questions and was immediately blocked, lol.

I saw one advertised on Kijiji just like it
Reported it in hopes they pulled the ad

Not sure what clone this saw is supposed to mimic, but I think it was designed not to be fixed:

Clean as a whistle but a non-runner with little if any compression, I gave it a D- and returned it to the owner about five years ago.
Tanaka is not a clone - they make their own machines, and actually have a very tough 2 cycle engine. They specialize in augers and other specialty equipment.

I believe that’s Stihl’s new milling saw, so what’s the problem? :bash:

I feel awful for those who pay money for misrepresented products like that.

Imagine being someone who needs a bigger saw, to maintain your property, or perhaps start a buisness with. You spend your money on what was advertised to be good, but the quality isn't there when it arrives...

Sometimes being thrifty is too expensive. One of my biggest pet peeves is having to fight with tools that are needed.

Maybe coincidence but it looks like the same floor.
Kijiji is littered with these “Stihls”, I always laugh but feel bad for those who take the bait

Most jap stuff is pretty decent to respectable
But, it may not be reparable if it quits or is burned out. In this case (post #11) that is what I found out. Any mechanic trying to work on one of these will quickly discover that.

Was it an issue of parts availability or build quality? Any piece of equipment that gets abused can develop issues, and some are more fragile than others... I had thought Tanaka was one of the better brands.
